Son shot another bull this year with the 140 berger vld. Distance was 190 yards, mv was 2650 fps and shot hit shoulders broadside. Straight down after first and only shot. Typical results for us.
Learn the gut free cleaning method. You may have had a totally different experience with a solid copper or bonded bullet with that shot placement. The SST worked amazingly well all things considered.
Can't use the .22 caliber here in CO but we trended down over the years to 6.5x47 for everything. Got a pic last night of another bull elk for my son. 140 berger vld at 2650 fps and dead elk. We've discussed going down to 6 creedmoor but I hate retooling when the little 6.5 stuff works so good...
You need a 5 gallon bucket or perhaps an old cooler or 15 gallon horse pail. I use home depot buckets for deer and antelope. Then buy 2 of the glass tank heaters off amazon or ebay. Anything like this will work...
I don't like stuff not as fast as advertised, but a 140 at 2820 fps is going to wreck stuff to very long range. But again, it should be up there around advertised velocity.
I sat a new spot a couple years back. Hiked in with a light lawn chair and a pair of branch loppers. Found a spot about 10 yards south of a scrape line. Cut a 3' wide shooting lane through some sumac, sat the chair next to a cedar and pulled up my face mask. Right at dark a nice 145" buck walked...
We've used the 140 vld extensively. Your buck was typical of our experiences over many animals the last 12-15 years. Son used a 156 a couple years back and hit a large whitetail buck a bit far back while he was on the move. Shot made him very very ill and he laid down within 40 yards. Quick...
Family and I have shot a lot of game with 140 berger vld from 6.5x47 and 6.5-06. Ranges from around 100 yards to slightly past 500 yards. Nothing has survived them and results are mostly DRT. Minimal meat loss typically. Elk, mule deer, whitetail, pronghorn, mtn goat, black bear. I don't use an...
Pacnor turned out a great shooter for me in mtn rifle contour. I'd use them again without hesitation. I have found the Bart 2B to be a bit on the chunky side still for a lighter rig. Also had good luck with Benchmark barrels and lighter contours. Bit of a wait but haven't called either lately.
Don't overlook adding a pair of $40-$60 inserts. I started using those about 8 years ago and its helped me a lot actually. Even the higher end boots seem to come with marginal inserts in them.
Not a solid copper guy. I will say the 6.5 creedmoor berger ammo with 135 classics was amazingly accurate in my rifle. Those same bullets in 4 other 6.5 rifles have been sub .5 moa accurate. I'd like a guys odds on that stuff.
