Find a system that helps you hold an angle. Like a stone system with a blade clamp and guide rods attached to stone holders. A cheap DMT set, a Hapstone system (with digital level to verify angles), a cheap Amazon knockoff of an expensive system, etc. If you suck at holding an angle on a stone...
Thanks, he's a good one! That was a quick scout trip. There is a lot more hanging off it when I'm hunting. I also run it with a britchen during the season.
I wouldn't want anything longer than the 19" on my saddle. The end would be under the saddle bags. I second guessed it too, before I used this one. Granted, I just throw it in the packhorse panyards unless I'm rolling with one horse.
Got a good chuckle reading this. I went down this road myself and it brought up some similar memories. You started off right by asking backcountry hunters. It requires a subset of skills that most horse folk do not possess. I started with a boatload of garbage advice from cowboy/gals that had...
Wet, miserable, and a sketchy packout over super slick deadfall. Purty scenery, though! (Wasn't quite sure what file size to upload... went from 9MB to 6MB)
Deer opener turned into a wolf hunt within the first hour. After running out the pelt to get checked and into a freezer, I rode back in. Next morning, I went in after another wolf and found this guy. This buck had just shed velvet, and his white &red antlers immediately stuck out. I passed on...
Chainsaws are a no-go during the season. (Not allowed in some of the areas I hunt). I'd certainly sneak in my electric before season. But looking for something slimmer to throw in the pack.
What saws are you guys packing for clearing trail??? (Or mostly for when a damn tree drops across a previously open path). It's about time to start making my way into some new trails.
I wear camo because I also hunt archery, turkeys, etc, in the same clothing. I focus more on the performance of the clothing. Never really felt the need to buy extra solid colored gear for the sole purpose of trying to look cooler in the eyes of people I don't give a damn about.
Bergers can be all over the map on depths. Even the Hybrids. My 6cm 108 eol's love .070. My old .25-06 115 vld's liked .010. With the yellow box, I don't hesitate to back them way off.
I've done it several times. More hunts than scouts. I hate to say it, but most horse hunters don't really grasp the lightweight mentality. When everything is dyneema, titanium, and carbon fiber, a load out on one horse is doable. That is provided the horse is a brick sh**house (which mine are)...
Terrain dependent. If there is a lot of brush/logs and it's not flat, then No hobbles. I'd rather chase them than have one flipped over & hung up. If it's flat and just grass, I have hobbled a few problem animals. I don't tie up at night, because I want them getting food and/or moving when it's...
I'm a bit late to the party, but mule deer hunting is something I can definitely chime in on. (Especially solo hunting). The best pack stock is the stock that can follow you into the rough & steep country. Horses and mules just ain't it! Every time I take the nags, it is more of a minus than a...
I switched to a GallagherS12 solar unit this year. That little sucker packs a punch! It is definitely not weight prohibitive with horses. I always run my basecamps with solar fencing. That way my fat lazy horses can mow down some calories and keep themselves occupied.
Wow, this thread revived from the dead! I posted it two years ago looking for colors that matched well with sagebrush. I was out of the country and didn't trust the colors based on computer images. It turned into an unsolicited tutorial, which I figured would benefit other folks, so I just let...
Has anyone put the S12 on an ounce scale??? I've got some long hunts coming up, and I'm considering switching over (for my horses at a minimum). I've seen 2.1 on the website and 2.4 on other sites.
