OnX bought Toprut (draw odds app)at the end of last year. I haven't seen much about the interface between the two, but it will be interesting. It seems like they are trying to become a one stop shop.
Another vote for Via. When it is windy and cold, the last thing I want to do is fumble around with a press or a filter for a pour over. Quick jetboil to heat the water, and then good to go.
I joined mcseal2 on this hunt, and figured I would share a few of my own lessons learned/observations, especially around logistics. I'll add the same disclaimer - this was just my second Alaska DIY hunt, and there are others on here who know a lot more than me!
Gear - I focused on "warm" and...
If it won't fit under the seat in front of you, they are not going to allow it as a personal item: https://www.delta.com/us/en/baggage/carry-on-baggage
I have used smaller backpacks as a personal item without issue, but nothing with a frame.
I fly frequently, and with the exception of Alaska...
Great write up! Thanks for taking the time to go into detail, and congrats on the nice bucks. A group of four of us are looking at a trip to Kodiak in 2022 to chase deer, although we are thinking about a drop hunt. Your post gives us lots to think about!
This is a good point. I should have noted that this year was certainly the exception and not the rule for wild birds in the area. Central Kansas has really been tough hunting for roosters in the last several years.
We had excellent luck with pheasants and quail just east of Salina this year, but it was a few weeks into the season on private land that had not been hunted at all. Very likely that the birds may have been pushed into that area.
I've heard that it is generally better further west, as others...
I love to cook, and having good knives makes the process so much more enjoyable. Once you've used good knives, you'll wonder how you ever got by without them.
I've used Cutco, Shun, Wustof and Henckels, among others. All of those are solid, although there is a huge quality range even across...
That is really close to our 2020 hunt out of Kotzebue w/ Golden Eagle. We figured about 6500, but we split lodging and some other costs between 3 of us.
I think 200g would have been a little light for me. There were several mornings/evenings where the temp dropped well below freezing. I'd rather have boots a little too warm than too cold, especially in the back country.
400 gram.
That turned out to be the right amount. Temps ranged from upper 40s the first day to 10 degrees the last day. With all of the walking, I think 800-1000g may have been too much.
We stayed at Sunny Willow B&B. It's a guy's house, so basically an AirB&B situation. I'd definitely recommend it.
Skip the hotel - when we were there, they were using one floor for COVID quarantine, so it was never a consideration, but after seeing it and the cost, I'd definitely look at...
We used Golden Eagle for a September caribou hunt this year, and I'd use them again. They flew our group of three out in 2 Cessna 206s, and actually were able to fly us out to the field a day early. I liked that they showed some flexibility.
Both planes were in great shape. I'm sure that is...
These look like they would work well, especially when paired with good gaiters. The rubber bottom is critical, I think, because of how often you are walking in some amount of water. The Kenetreks have a similar structure.
The nice part about the rubber Alphaburlys was that I didn't worry...
You are correct that we were generally in lower areas, but like mcseal2 said above, the tussocks actually got worse as we would gain elevation up on higher ridges. There, the tussocks were larger/deeper, with the added challenge of hiking up hill!
I was continually surprised by where we...
Used an InReach Explorer this year on an Alaskan drop Caribou hunt and it worked great. I'll definitely use it on my next Alaska trip. Twincedar above laid it out well. The only additional point I'd add is that the InReach Explorer serves as GPS as well, so a good primary or back up map. I...
This year, I flew with one box in my locked gun case and one in my checked bag, for the reason mcseal2 noted about improving the odds that one makes it. In the past, I've always put it in my checked bag, just for simplicity. TSA regs say either is fine.
Make sure it is in the factory box or...
