He had fully guided hunters paying top dollar to Hunt the one property he leases that actually holds elk. But then he would send the semi guided or unguided hunters just over the property line hunting the trails that the hunters were hoping the elk wood used to get to them.
He would dump a pile...
Biggest scammer out there. I was an outfitter in Montana and met him at an outdoor show. Everything sounded great and I sent a few of my clients there to get Roosevelts. I also went there to guide them. Not one single word Mike Vaughn said was true. Not one. He treated his lovely wife like a dog...
Same here! I love planning trips whether it’s a hunt or a vacation. What else do you have to do all winter besides look at maps draw odds, etc.? It’s half the fun and in the end, it plays a part in self satisfaction.
If the unit is worth hunting, you should only need to scout two or three areas of about 10 square miles to find one that has what you’re looking for. If you’re doing it right, those areas should still be worth hunting when the pressure is on.
Never say never but he’d be pretty lucky to find one. You’d almost need to know someone. A inside connection. And it wouldn’t be in the 3-4 thousand range. The more at affordable option might be a property where the hunting isn’t what you pay for as much as it is the access just to cut through...
How long ago was that? Deer are common on ranches. Most if not all ranches have at least some deer. Elk are not that way. If a ranch has elk in Wyoming, it’s usually outfitted by the landowner or leased by an outfitter.
In Wyoming? Not a chance. More like fully guided hunts starting at $9000 or $10,000. If I could book a private land, hunt in Wyoming, where there were actually elk and I didn’t have to rent horses I would do it every year. Me and 7250 other people.
On the subject of lighter caliber guns, just remember the more energy you send out one end of a gun the more energy you’re going to get back in your direction. The only variable would be a muzzle brake or suppressor. So while you’re focusing mainly on the energy coming back at you in the form of...
Are we really suggesting a bunch of pea shooters for a guy who said he wants an elk to drop in its tracks? You guys make me shake my head.
These days everyone wants to shoot the lightest thing they can. Why don’t you shoot the most deadly gun you can handle instead. Cut off the man bun, get rid...
Neither. Where are you most likely to find people? Running the bottoms or along the tops of the ridges. They are the easiest places to travel. More often than not there is a trail on top or bottom. Look for elk on mid slope benches. I prefer the ones 2/3 or 3/4 of the way to the top as long as...
You have already seen how difficult timber hunting can be. Instead of investing money to try to become more successful at that style of hunting have you considered other styles of hunting first? Maybe you should do a little homework on the maps and satellite image and give a more semi open area...
I live in western Pennsylvania. 24 hours of driving to western Wyoming. The southern region has more open country than the west. As far as blow downs, that’s just something you can only avoid by having some experience in a particular area.
I agree about looking for at least semi open country...
There is no way an outfitter could convince me that a hunt starting in the 28th would be better than one ending then. I think that’s a sales tactic to fill the second hunt. I’m sure he can fill the first one years in advance.
Every woodstove is different. I’ve had multiple woodstoves that were the same model and behaved a little differently. Woodstoves used to heat homes are double walled and have tighter seals than a single wall steel cylinder stove.
For me, the big thing is that there’s not a lot of time in...
You should always hope for the best, but definitely plan for the worse. I would never go rifle hunting without a way to keep everything warm and more importantly dry as a bone. You can’t hide in your sleeping bag forever.
