if you'd like better/more consistent performance and want to stay with a mono, look at the hammer bullets. 155 gr would be a great pick. if you're buying factory, try the accubond.
barnes are a good choice if you can keep the velocity up and add a fair bit of resistance (shoulder). long shots...
You're correct, it's still a gamble. And I'm 1 for 2 on getting a bull. I've always seen elk and the guides were super helpful in answering questions.
As for the "only pull the trigger" part of your comment.... That was a bit out-of-place. Unlike many people, I lost 30 pounds and had my gun...
This is the reason I go guided. I can't scout from 1500 miles away. I don't know migration patterns or where they go when pressured from hunters.
I'm a DIY guy thru and thru, but I also know when to call for help.
Yes it's more expensive, but I also got more (dandy 6x6). When you figure out the...
The 6.5 doesn't add anything to what you already have.
Get the 300 and have an honest elk rifle. Besides an aftermarket stock will change how you feel about factory stocks.

A 1:10 twist will stabilize the bullets you're talking about. Heavy mono bullets are a different conversation.
A R700 has about the longest factory box mag, but you can add a Wyatt box extension (3.85" or 4” coal) for about 150 total (part and labor). The milspec 5r rifles are reported to be...
The 308 will do what you want. Easy to shoot, ammo everywhere, and is known for accuracy.
My group has killed elk at 400+ yards with the 308 (all 1 shot kills).
If you reload, the variety of bullets is second to none.
IMO the 06 is overkill for deer but not enough better for elk to justify...
A 140 accubond would be my first pick. Never the wrong answer.
Also, if you run the numbers, the 7-08 falls below 1500 foot pounds of energy between 350-400 yards (140 @ 2850 fps).
Good luck!

Completely fair question.
Let me take a cartridges to compare.
300 s.i/Sherman mag w/215 berger
82 grs H1000 yields 3050 fps
My 300 win mag
77 grs H1000 yields 2905 fps
All with the same length barrel. At what distance would the terminal effects be noticeably different?
The issue in comparing...
While a 270 wsm is a fine elk round, the 308 might be a better fit in this case. A 130 ttsx would definitely do a number on elk and be very gentle on the shoulder. You could upsize the bullet as skills develope. Consider a radial brake too, as they offer mild recoil reductions without much...
Will need to see the brass. If there's ejector marks and swipes-its over pressure (could be carbon ring or headspace). If the case head is normal-it's the primary extractor and needs to be timed.

While I will say Sherman cartridges are well designed, only you can determine if they are with the effort.
I'm a fairly advanced reloader and love ballistics. The "better performing" cartridges is one area that is interesting to me. I've noticed people often misuse ballistic coefficient and...
The 308 is a great round, especially when the distances are reasonable-sub 500 yards. Easy to shoot and very versatile.
The 300 wm is a better cartridge for elk in that it hits with authority. Just take whatever bullet your 308 shoots and add 400-500 fps. The energy impact is significant. So...
I'd take a 300 wsm/wm due to the versatility. Factory loads from 150-215 grs.
Find someone to load you a 130 ttsx and experience a laser of death. Super easy recoil too.
I love the 215 Berger for elk, but a 180/200 accubond is down right mean.

Have both a vanguard and a Tikka, but short action 308.
I didn't notice any difference in accuracy.
The differences are triggers, stocks, twist rates, and possibly mag length.
For a 300 wm-my favorite cartridge- heavier bullets (200+) really need a 9 twist for optimal stability. But you can...
A couple of years ago, I was that lucky hunter. My elk hunt lasted about 35 minutes. Shot the herd bull and he face planted almost instantly. Being as flatlander, I was barely adjusted to 6800' elevation.
Usually though, I'm like you and get frustrated by all the hard work-with a rather...
This is a little situational. If I'm using a 215 Berger 300 wm or 338 edge 300 Berger, all shots are on the table. The biggest thing is distance. 30 yard neck/head shot, bang. 300 yards- maybe neck- no head. I'm a lung shooter, but if there situation dictates a different kill shot- so be...
It all comes down to accuracy and energy. If you told me that you're thinking of longer shots 400+, then I'd suggest a 300 mag of your choice. The 06 will still get it done, it's just not optimal.
But for more normal shots, the 06 is a fine option-as is a 308 hot loaded with a 175 Berger;).
My...
