Horse Pack out Castle , Crazy, or Little Belt Mountains Montana?

Anyone know of or used in the past a licensed pack out service in either the Crazy, Castle, or Little Belt Mountains in the National Forest lands? My hunting partner had to have back surgery after the last time we hauled an elk out so now that's not an option anymore for him. Any help would be...

Tough question for this year with the moon. I would still prefer going before Muzzleloader season.

Is a 25 degree bag enough for September in Colorado?

I think you will be fine with a pad. I use a 25 that time of year but I have had to sleep in my insulating layer a few nights when it was really cold but that's been rare.

    Idaho vs CO OTC archery

Both states have good OTC units but neither are easy OTC. Idaho has a Wolf problem and Colorado has a bunch of hunters problem. It's kind of a wash. I've hunted each OTC and I prefer Idaho.

    NM Unit 36 Hunt Dates

Haven't hunted 36 but have hunted 34 several times and would prefer the late September hunt. One thing to consider would be quality of the ranch hunt. If the ranch holds good numbers of elk then go for it. If not then definitely the unit wide tag would be better.

    Food

When backpacking I like a granola/dried fruit combo mixed with protein powder and powdered milk. Make several of those in a baggie and simply add water in the morning. Give you all you need and breaks the boring Oatmeal breakfast. Dinner for me is usually the Mountain House freeze dried like...

    Hunting off your back

Over the years we have become more and more mobile just for the simple fact it saves a lot of miles on the boots instead of walking back to base camp every night. I love it. If you go this route spend what your budget can afford on lightweight gear to lower your overall pack weight. Days in...

    2020 Archery Elk advice/state/first timer

We have done good in both Idaho and Montana OTC units. The best advice I wish I would have listened to early on was to pick a decent unit and learn it every year. Each year you seem to learn more and more and steadily get more consistent results.
