Yeah, I had read all the hype and glowing reports for a few years before my purchase. Just my luck...
I think they got so popular so fast, that they sacrificed QC in order to blow more product out the door.
I sent one of their discontinued Woodsmans back, in 7-08, because it wouldn't shoot to spec. Took over 10 weeks to get it back. They said their smith went through every 7-08 Woodsman in their inventory, and none of them would shoot! They finally tweeked one of the better examples and sent it...
My vote would also be for a gently used Kowa 773/774. Or a an 883/884, if the extra weight is not an issue.
I paid $1,750 for an 884 in immaculate condition, with 20-60 wide angle eyepiece, a little over a year ago.
Hell, for the antelope, deer and elk that the OP is looking to tip over, I shoot 120 TTSXs at 3150 out of a 7-08 22" Montana. Any of the LRXs should be quite suitable on top of a 280AI case.
Yeah, possibly the second or third week in Oct. Historically, the first week in Oct. has been the prime week. However, my guide told me that the last couple of years, rut activity has been slowed by unseasonably warm weather.
It's a crap shoot. You go and book the second or third week and...
I hunted this year, near Falher. Warm weather kept rut activity low. Never saw a bull worth punching my tag, though meat bulls, cows and calves were seen daily, as were elk, mulies, whitetails and bears.
I drove, so can't help with the airline situation. If you fly, make sure you have a plan to...
Not a mule deer, but I just came home from Alberta with an uncut moose tag in my pocket. I had opportunities at smaller meat bulls, and while I do love moose meat, I held out for at least a 40" bull or nothing. But rhe weather was warm and the bulls weren't responding, so it didn't happen.
I'm...
Take a look at the Ithaca 37 Deerslayer lll in 20 GA. They claim 4" accuracy at 200 yds. I don't have one, but I have a field grade 20 Featherlight. Extremely well made gun.
Apologies for not following through. The replacement spring did the trick.
Last year I had the same condition develop with my other Montana. A new spring also remedied that situation.
Look for a Kimber Montana in 7-08 (you might get lucky). Load it with 120 TTSXs or 139 LRXs. I use mine on everything up to, and including, elk and moose.
I'm in Wyoming, on my way home right now from an Alberta moose hunt. Outfitter cost was $8,000 for a 6 day hunt. I had to drive from FL because they're out in the boonies and no way to freight meat home. So figure another 2K for fuel, motels and meals round trip.
BTW, my new chest freezer is...
I have 2 Silky's. I keep a 130 Pocketboy, with fine teeth, at camp for cutting skullcaps. I carry a 170 Pocketboy, with large teeth, for when I need to clear a trail or make a quickie blind, etc.
I'd take them both and stick with that usage strategy. I have a Kowa 554 and an 884, and use them the same way.
BTW, not all of us feel that Swaro is, "much better quality in general", especially when it comes to spotters. Higher price is not always an indicator of better quality.
Good luck on...
