Doc,
Every year I look forward to the recounting of your annual moose hunt, thanks for sharing; it is much appreciated.
As always, you and your son Done Good…..Really Good!
Check Brothers of the Bow web site, if it is still running, you might be able to buy one of their books or some of their DVD’s there. Most of their books were/are limited runs and sell out quick. They have a cult like following (yes you can count me as one of them) that buys everyone of the...
I have owned over one dozen Schafer’s, they are great bows. Bought seven of them at a trading post (fancy name for a pawn shop) for $550, around 2012. Four of them were made by Paul, but I digress, that is another story. I had a couple made, had a few others I picked up on Craigslist or the...
I got tired of the ther furs, wool, beaver, fox, tail, ect….picking up every burr or sticker in the woods and went to my version of cat whiskers. I now use the rubber legs for tying flies, they are the same as cat whiskers, come in over a dozen colors, different diameters, and costs a lot less...
I have had three Robertsons (still have the longbow) and two Schafer long bows (still have both of them) with the old Robertson connection system, they have all worked fine without any issues.
The bow bolt Dick uses now, in my opinion, is much better, it is what I use when making takedown...
When I built glass bows, places I shipped them to in the Masonite box include most of the lower 48 states, Canada, Alaska, Turkey, Guam, Australia, France, Switzerland, Japan, Great Britain, and Germany.
For expensive recurves I build a wooden box/frame out of 1x2 fir and screw on a Masonite bottom, then line it with foam, wrap with bubble wrap, pack with styrofoam peanuts or newspapers, then screw on the Masonite lid. Never had one that didn’t arrive in perfect condition.
For inexpensive...
Unit 313 is south of Bozeman, between the Gallatin and Yellowstone rivers, most of the outfitters for that unit are based in out of the paradise valley between Livingston and Gardiner. Castle Rorck outfitters might be able to help on that side; they are good people. Check with the outfitter...
I went solo for AK moose in 2020 and 2021, it can be done. I would not recommend anybody trying it unless they are an experienced woodsman, in good physical shape, and most important, they are mentally tough with the right mind set. I was 63 in 2021, shot my moose 1 1/8 mile from the pickup...
The best advise on shooting with a thumb ring I have found is Armin Hirmer on YouTube. He has hundreds of videos on shooting with a thumb ring. There are literally dozens of types of thumb rings and many different types of release methods. Turk’s, Mongolian, Chinese, Korean, ect…. All had...
I have known Blake of Eclipse before him and Brad bought the Journeyman equipment and started Eclipse. When I found out he stopped making the 4-blade, I called him and convinced him to do another run and make me enough 4 blades to last me the rest of my life. Also bought a hundred extra...
I use the 14 strands if D97 with .026, they fit perfect on my nocks. Can’t even tell you what make the nocks are, they are the same ones I have used for a few decades.
My preferred broadhead is the Eclipse 145 with bleeder, makes it 153+/-, I take the bleeders out for moose. Any well made broadhead will get it done, if it fly‘s good.
My belief: Most people would be better off spending the time spend worrying about their broadhead, practicing putting the arrow...
