Gun for Elk Hunting in Thick Timber

You could get some help by visiting a store but you will do a lot better by increasing your skills at the game of elk in the timber. If you are after a bull... He will almost always be stationary for a brief few seconds upon the jump from bed to determine how best to follow his cows. Focus...

Anyone solo backcountry hunting over the age of 60?

Not just humans either, once I was horn hunting and came upon a very big 5pt bull upside down in a gully with his horns entangled in some brush and buried very deeply into the dirt. To the best of my analysis he flipped over in that deep little gully in the deep winter snow and got stuck...

Anyone solo backcountry hunting over the age of 60?

I was just reminded of how quickly things can go awry, and how being solo can change the outcome. Took 8 llamas to set up my elk camp, got it set and woke up and was going to climb a knob and look for elk at daybreak, was feeling a bit lazy and thought a pot of coffee would really help with...

    Packing Arrows

For light weight protection you could buy a "plans tube" like is used for the architectural plans stored on a job site. Very light but not as bullet proof as PVC with caps. I have a 6" PVC with caps which holds my take down bow and the arrows in one device. It is a bit heavy but my bow is a...

Choosing where to live in Colorado

Dont forget the skeeters... Cant forget them! But I'm still coming to grips with calling GJ a "small town". Funny how people see things, friends just left who are shopping for a house in Fort Collins, cause they want to live in a "small town".

    The new class of trainees.

I agree applesauce so I came in from upriver yesterday and finished the trail cleanup. Gorgeous country and even in today’s Colorado not a boot print anywhere. Just moose and bear. Here is one guy who will be happy walking up a nice clear trail while he trims the willows.

    The new class of trainees.

Between building a barndominium and spearing fish in the head I'm getting off to a slow start for the summer training session this year. Its getting to be almost more than I can handle with conditioning runs for 20 and training runs for new guys/gals. This years class consists of 2-2yr olds...

    Remington vssf .223

Well I took a small aside detour from the vssf due to several factors including the way they just fell off the face of the earth in availability and the accompanying sky-rocket in price. My friend just picked me up a CZ 527 in .22 hornet. Ive got the dies/bullets/brass on the way and cant wait...

a question for the Builders on here.

Many ways to skin this kitty but so many variables on deciding between quality and cost. Do you want the cheapest shop, or the nicest? And oh so many little steps along the way. Any time you bury wood it is a temporary thing, if you are 70 years old it may be permanent but only to you. If...

Amateur Question About Backcountry Stock in Alaska

Llamas fit exactly the niche you describe, and they handle cold really well. It might be a good fit for you. For moose you are gonna need a few of 'em.

What would you say is the wildest part of Colorado?

If wild means lack of people try the NW corner many places your bones will never be found. But the fly fishing is less than stellar.

    Colorado GMU 181/18 update?

Was scorched, is scorched, and many long run conditions have changed such as roads that no longer are roads and trails that aren't trails anymore. The good news is you can walk about anywhere due to the beetle kill is gone, that bad news is there is not much reason to want to walk there.

Pack Stock For The Dedicated Mule Deer Hunter

Be careful on high quality hay. I had two die in winter on 4th cutting alfalfa that was unbelievable quality. The old ones handled it fine I would be suspicious the young ones were like teenagers at a Golden Corral and didn't know enough to stop chewing and go for a walk. Both puffed up like...

    Snowbirds

I'm kinda flexing my wings right now. Yesterday at -3 and looked at the weather at my southern birds nest @86 and it made me realise I could float on water and cast rather than drive on water and drill... not really that tough of a choice to make.

Do elk cross large boulder fields

Can they? yes absolutely Will they? no Once I was the second human contact for a group of 50-60 head at tree line. Upon running into me they panicked and thought they were surrounded (it was summer). The lead cow bolted up into friggin mountain goat country and I stood and took pics ( this...
