New rules on posting spots? Really Rokslide?

Honest question here. What information should we really be sharing online, to everyone? Should there be a playbook for each unit that anyone can see, like a hiking or climbing guidebook but for hunting spots: these are the access points, here's a list of bedding/feeding areas, glass from here...

Let's help some guys/gals get their first archery elk!

I really think a lot of people get so hung up on "archery elk hunting" they forget that it's still just hunting. Same basic hunting skills will always apply, no matter how many complicated plays and calling scenarios you learned from a podcast.

Let's help some guys/gals get their first archery elk!

I'll give an example from a couple seasons ago. Got on some elk at first light, bugling their way up the mountain. Morning cold air was flowing downhill and they were talking on their own so I just kept up with them, they climbed maybe 1500' before they got quiet. Got close enough to see one...

Let's help some guys/gals get their first archery elk!

It's not as bad as sitting for deer, mostly because I'm not really trying to ambush one right there. For deer, yeah, I'm going to sit motionless and alert in a place where I can draw and shoot. For elk... I'm going to lay down on a hillside in some cover by a tree, quietly snacking, looking at...

Let's help some guys/gals get their first archery elk!

I started bringing a small paperback. Days in September are pretty long, it's pretty easy to burn myself out if I get antsy and just keep hiking until I get a bugle or spot an elk. I'd end up with 15-20 mile days that weren't very productive, compared to getting on elk and then patiently waiting...

Let's help some guys/gals get their first archery elk!

I think a ton of newer bowhunters don't even realize there's another way. They've watched so much youtube elk hunting, all they know is aggressive bugling and complicated calling scenarios. Or they want a flowchart of "if you hear the elk do x, you call back with y". If you're spot and...

Let's help some guys/gals get their first archery elk!

Yeah, this is where confidence/experience comes in - both in general, but also in your specific area. I didn't have the patience to sit down and wait for that midmorning bugle until I started really being confident that those elk were actually in there. That only came after a few years where I...

Let's help some guys/gals get their first archery elk!

I think it's really worth considering what type of hunts get filmed and what don't. Aggressive calling films well, you can position a whole camera crew and call the bull in. Cruising all day for bugles, long range hunting, glassing open country, even sitting treestands and wallows, these all...

Let's help some guys/gals get their first archery elk!

If you've got time to scout, definitely do it. You're spot on about looking for road access, water, terrain, etc, but yeah, if I'm out there I'm pretty much always looking for elk. Where they are in September compared to July depends on a ton of factors, but as long as you're aware that it can...

Let's help some guys/gals get their first archery elk!

Winds depend on the weather and the terrain, they can be stable in some areas. Thermals will be consistently uphill on an exposed slope on a sunny day, but the north-facing slopes where elk usually hang out midday can definitely be tricky. Still, they're usually going to stabilize by 10 or 11 on...

Let's help some guys/gals get their first archery elk!

This is #1 right here, not just for punching a tag but for success long-term. There's just no way to get around that archery takes time. The more experience you have, the faster you can get on opportunities and the more likely you are to be successful with an opportunity, but inexperienced...

Help choosing ideal chambering/rifle to shoot lead free projectiles.

Anyone hunt with the DRT 223 rounds yet? I'd be really interested in that as an option for deer and antelope, might have to get a box and see how it shoots first.

Non lead bullets and performance at distance

Why would they make this so hard to find? You'd think they would want hunters to understand differences in their products, especially if they designed them that way.

How many big game tags is too many?

I've seen a handful of the big hunting shows like this recently. They start off with how they drew a "once or twice in a lifetime" type of tag in some incredible area, but they've only got a few days to hunt it because they've got to get to another tag in another state. Leaves a bad taste in my...

Rifle scopes you'd love to see Form test

100% describes me right there. I just assumed that random zero shifts were either my fault or just a thing that happened to everyone, so every year you have to burn some ammo chasing groups around. I figured the reason some scopes cost 5x my basic 3-9x40 was dialing turrets, more features and...

Prana Men's Stretch Zion II Pant - $46.99 - camo

FYI if you haven't seen these in person, they seem to be lower quality than the earlier Zions. Fabric is much thinner, cut is a little off, and the camo pattern is a lot more blue looking than it appears in the photos. I picked up a pair of these a little while ago and returned them almost...

    Posting unit #'s

That may be true, but there's some important differences that don't get discussed. Older relatives of mine that hunted in the 60s-80s mostly went after small game around family farms. A lot of eastern areas didn't have the same big game opportunities we have now, sure, but I think there's been a...

    Posting unit #'s

Couldn't agree more. A lot of folks get real offended by this idea, but to me there's a big difference between supporting new hunters and actively recruiting/marketing for them. We don't need to "convince" people to try hunting through social media, TV shows, corporate marketing, online tag draw...

    Traditional-only archery seasons?

Oregon has started adding traditional-only hunts for deer and elk in a few areas. I agree there's plenty of people in modern archery seasons that have no business slinging arrows at live animals, so I'm not sure how much impact it'll have in that regard. I think the main goal is to increase...

    Spot and stalk mountain lion

I've only seen a few cats in the wild, but this is definitely what I've seen too. They don't stick around and browse like deer or elk, they just cruise through at a steady pace. Pretty hard to make much of a stalk after you spot one, I'd think you pretty much have to be in position to shoot already.
