Fun thanks. Attached is a couple of the...
Thought this outfitter got shut down… he’s known for using the refuge with no permit, ect. Thanks for sharing. There’s other legit outfits like Expedition Lodge if you want to hunt that unit.
I did several trips to Kodiak this season as an AK resident. Two of them were solo hunts for mountain goat, I got a Billy on the second solo trip. Yes it’s on the risky side as far as hunts go. But for those hunts it was walk in from the road, so logistically simple at least. I have no idea if...
To second what’s been said above, is this a hunt where it even makes sense to go in for 10 days? Not to make assumptions but it’s not always advantageous to try and turn a normal lower 48 hunt into a sheep hunt. Maybe some more details would help people understand the nature of the trip. I just...
Brown bear country solo hunts, shitty weather day, you’ll catch me cooking and eating inside the Hilleberg. What choice do you have at a certain point. You have to accept some risk.
Lakefront hotel or AirBnB. 49th State before leaving. And for the post hunt greasy calories and cheap beer the Long Branch Saloon.
More booze at Double shovel cider or Brewerks. Ice cream at WooHoo. Enjoy
If you are carrying all your own gear, in gnarly terrain you bring the solo tent. If your guide is carrying half the gear and it’s more mellow, then footprint and weight don’t matter as much so why not bring a two man. I’ve seen too much horrific weather here in AK to not carry a 4 season tent...
6’ 3” the Soulo fits me fine. I’ve fit myself, all my gear, and still able to carefully run my stove inside. If you pull out the inner and just use the outer for certain trips and it opens up even more.
Kodiak, May 3rd. Best one I could scrounge up and I’m happy with him. 35 yards eye to eye on the beach after chasing them around the high country for over a week.
Good excuse to get in the sheep mountains as a non res! I’ve seen a couple blackies in the 20D high country but a fraction of what is in the coastal units. They’re a lot more predictable to find as the snow line is still creeping up the mountain. Better be dumb and tough to hike in from the road...
Usually my little Kowa 553 is plenty for bears. I’m bringing a swaro 65mm to Kodiak this spring, where the country is more open, and for more careful judgement with this coveted tag.
