Do's & Don'ts: starting over at the pro shop

Getting back into bowhunting after a long hiatus. I'll soon be going to a local archery shop, one that I'm told has a good reputation, to shop for my new compound bow setup. One thing that I didn't like before about the sport was the juggling act of draw weight/broadhead weight/spine, and...

    Book about Elk?

Probably not quite what you're looking for. But a large, heavy book for anybody who really wants to nerd out on elk: North American Elk - Ecology and Management I bought my copy a couple years ago from the publisher Wildlife Management Institute. Looks like I did just in time for them to stop...

Posted lands that are not Private-recourse?

I work for a federal land management agency in Idaho and I was talking about this very subject with one of our Law Enforcement Officers the other day. He told me they carry a can of black spray paint in their patrol trucks as standard gear to spray over orange painted fence posts on public lands...

    Electric heater for large tent

Looking for advice on a portable electric heater for my large Tentipi Tent (17' diameter, 10' at peak). I have a wood stove, and it's good. Have a Big Buddy, and that works too under the right conditions. But sometimes I'm camping on the pacific northwest coast during the rainy season and...

And it was then he realized.......

Left Boise on a 12-hour drive to British Columbia for salmon fishing. Three hours later, while gassing up in La Grande, OR, I realized my passport was still on my dresser at home. My fishing buddy couldn't understand why I was suddenly swearing and laughing at the same time. He didn't talk at...

Hanging mount on picture rail molding

I have a mule deer european mount on a plaque with the basic metal notch to hang on a heavy screw or bolt (see pic). I now live in a house with lath and plaster walls that I prefer not to drill into. But the walls also have picture rail moldings, which I utilize now for all my pictures. Works...

    Game Warden shortage nationwide

Passing along an article about the shortage of game wardens throughout the country. A tough job for sure. I know I'm pleased to see one, the few times that I have. I wonder how many are on this forum? Hunting for Game Wardens: A Shortage of Conservation Officers Threatens Wildlife

    Soft Camper Shells

I hadn't looked into that, but maybe I should. I will only be using this for weekend trips to the hills, so, not really around town and such. But, you bring up a good point.

Scouting in Sept. for elk in Oct.

I'll be hunting in central Idaho when the rifle season opens on Oct. 15. I'm fortunate to only live 2-3 hours away and so I have plenty of opportunity to scout in late July and August. But I'm contemplating how to go about scouting in September. My question is twofold: 1) To what degree can I...

    Catching Big Trout

Depending on what rivers you're fishing, target just below the dam. Tailwaters are excellent places to find the biggest of the big browns. Target the tailwaters and do it at night with big lures or flies. I'll also second the notion of fishing for them in the fall.

    Soft Camper Shells

I just ordered a Softopper for my '17 Tacoma and included the back screen addition. I did not buy the boot cover. Will arrive by Monday, supposedly. I knew I wanted a soft top and from what I researched... to me... Softopper just had a bit of an edge over the Bestop.

    Drift boat/raft

While I still would generally steer you towards a raft, if this was something you were primarily fishing out of and also by yourself.... a drift boat may be a better choice. And I only say that because they are much easier to maneuver and hold in place. You can drop that anchor out in most...

    Drift boat/raft

I've owned both and... overall... I would recommend a raft. Primarily because you seem to be asking for something to 'do it all'. But I fully agree with other comments on this thread: it can depend in large part on the waters you plan on floating. I owned a 14' raft self-bailier with a...

    Idaho Draw Results

I drew an X-tag for deer and an X-tag for elk. Yeah! So I'll have 2 deer tags and 2 elk tags this fall. I'm liking my odds for putting meat in the freezer this winter.

Which flies do I bring to CO ?

In my experience fly-fishing throughout the West, local fly shops are plenty willing to give you the hatch information you need to know. I would just reach out to a fly shop in the nearest town to where you're going, call them up and I'm sure they'll set you up right. Good luck!

Do people trade hunts on this forum?

I've heard of sites where folks meet and 'trade' hunting opportunities. Does that happen, or allowed, on this site? Either way, if I was interested in looking into something like that, where best to go? Also, have any of you had experiences with doing something like that, good and/or bad...

Should I split my hunting time?

I should also mention, whatever decision I make, it has to be made weeks in advance. I can't decide on that first Sunday night to stick it out if I already told the office I'll be in Monday. I'm fortunate to have the vacation time and reasonable flexibility, but I do have to plan for office...

Should I split my hunting time?

And that's what I've done in the past. I've done the 10-day straight thing and a couple times when it's really nasty, or I just need a physical/mental break, I sleep in, or walked back early, chill, read a book. Feel comfortable about keeping my energy up. But I just wonder if it'll be an...
