A mix up on dates almost cost us an elk hunt one year. We discussed 2 different weeks with the outfitter. We finally settled on opening weekend. We sent a deposit, did the contract, covered all the bases. I tried calling the outfitter on the way up (28hr drive) and finally got in touch with him...
I'm from MS also, and I did a dall sheep hunt in AK in 2019. Pretty much like everyone has said, start saving to book a hunt, or try to win a hunt through the Sheep Show or many other WSF raffles. Most outfitters are booked far enough out that even after you put a deposit and book a hunt you'll...
I'd visit Barney's and Mtn View Sports. I'm a runner, so I ran some of the Tony Knowles Coastal Trail at the end of my sheep hunt. Also Snow City Cafe (downtown) or Midway Cafe (close to Barney's) have a good breakfast selection. Across from Snow City is the Roosevelt Room. It's like an...
I built mine prior to my 2019 sheep hunt. It started life as a Remington 700 Mountain Rifle in 280. I rebarreled it with a 24in Pac-Nor magnum profile chambered in 280AI. It's in a Bell and Carlson Alaskan Mountain Rifle stock, with Talley lightweight rings, and a Leupold VX3i. The factory...
I've been checking on some sandhill crane hunts around Lubbock, TX. Crooked Wing Outfitters has some openings around that time. I was looking for something in January and it looks like they're booked up then, but have some opening toward the end of November.
I hunted OTC with Matt last year. So did another Rokslider. It was my first sheep hunt. I have no complaints at all. Matt was a gracious host, and Josh Ellis kept us on sheep the whole hunt. It wasn't an easy hunt but that wasn't the fault of anybody but the sheep. I had a ball and would book...
We stayed in Gillette at the Candlewood Suites in 2018 around that timeframe. It wasn't full of hunters, but it was full of oilfield workers. It may not be as bad this year with oil prices like they are though. I'd book ahead just to make sure.
I started using Inov8 Bare XFs recently. I like them for a cross training shoe. They're zero drop and minimal cushion. They're good for sprints during a workout, but not for much running. They're great for squats and deadlifts. They even have a guard on the top and sides for rope climbs.
Here is a trail run recorded with my Instinct. It was a measured 24 miles that ended up showing me all over the map with 18.12 miles. The 2nd map is someone I ran with that was wearing a 645. They ended up with 23.15 miles.
If you are worried about accuracy in the distance of your activity tracking, look at the Fenix. Unless the GPS has improved with the solar version, the Instinct isn't accurate at all. A few of us in the group I run with have Instincts and they are routinely waaayyy off on distance. All of the...
Here is what I took last year. We hunted outside of Tok. Temps were in the 40s most days, with temps dipping into the 20s at night.
