Hey all, Thanks for the input so far! I'm not trying to hijack the thread because I'll be hunting with the OP Kimbersig. Just asking for some more info to guide our decisions.
We have a choice of going the second to the last week in the south coastal units or late archery in the few units...
I actually prefer to do that hunt solo!
But if I were paying non resident cost and I could afford an outfitter that would definitely be the way to go. I killed one in '17 and it almost made it to a place that required climbing gear before it died. He ended up on the very top of one of the domes...
My "everything but Coues" sheep rifle. Custom 7WSM on a Remington Model 7 action, lone wolf stock and Nikon Monarch 2.5-10. It has become my go to rifle. Accurate, sub 7lb scoped, enough energy for elk at 500, and built by yours truly!
Congrats on drawing an awesome tag!
That mountain can eat a guys lunch for sure. I think I ran into some guys from South Peak then some from G3 in January and they seemed to know their stuff. That hunt is probably the only hunt you will ever run into a guy carrying a bow and another guy next to...
Hey guys, sorry I haven't been active in here in a while. I started a new job in Montana and have been extremely busy with that, moving, and fishing every chance I can!
I'll go clean my inbox now..

I've hunted 49 a few times. Yes the atv traffic will be heavy but if you get off the roads you can find elk. Send me a pm and I'll get you some info.

Well it looks like I have an excuse to go to Missoula and Bozeman now!
I think I'll be in both for work occasionally anyway so I'll check them both out.
Thanks Guys!
I'm looking for input on bow shops in the Dillon, MT area.
Are there any in town?
I was told there was a good one in Rexburg, ID. Is it worth the drive?
It's great to hear so many positive comments on a place! The family is excited for all the adventures to come.
I may be reaching out to a few of you when I get up there if you don't mind helping a new guy get off in the right direction.
Troutbum, do you realize most of the outfit you're wearing...
Hey everyone it looks like I'll be an FNG again!
Only this time it'll be in Dillon, MT as I just landed a job there.
I'll start the end of May and move the family a little while after that when we close on a house.
The whole family is excited about the new opportunities and we will surely spend...
Its been quite a few years since I took a GPS with me and I feel more confident now with my navigation than I did with a GPS in hand. I currently use my Samsung Note 5 for GPS/Mapping(Backcountry Navigator), Pictures, and paired to my sat messenger to text the wife and kids. I also picked up an...
Either will work great for that purpose but I would recommend stepping up to the 160 class bullets in the 7-08 for best performance past 300 yards. The PRC should have less wind deflection and plenty of energy for an elk at 400 yards. I ended up building a 7-08 for Coues hunting a few years ago...
