    I love the looks of a leather Montana sling but the mountaineer makes more sense for backpack hunts. I want to say they are 3.6 ounces. I’m taking one to Alaska in 2 weeks.

    I really do like mine and the ability to change from bone to wood saw but…..it still doesn’t beat the versatility and weight of a silky saw which I end up carrying most of the time.

    First of 10-15 training hikes done today. (4 miles/70lbs) I’m very active. Swim/lift 5 days a week but have learned from past trips that nothing quite compares to getting under pack weight to make carrying a load in the mountains easier. My goal is to get to the range next week.

    Compact binos?

    I have SLC 10x42s and picked up some used EL 8x32s for similar purposes. It’s a wonderful combo. I’ve had the 25 and 30 CL Swaros. They are both very nice but prefer the 32 ELs.

    Can I just say.....

    I was in the absolute middle of nowhere Alaska, north of the Artic Circle, fighting with useless short tent stakes. Down the river comes famous explorer Roman Dial. He told me he doesn’t use stakes. Lashes the tent cord around a stick and puts a rock on top.
