It's a decent scope. But, I really wouldn't trust a Vortex on a big hunt, personally.
They have great customer service, but there is a reason their warranty is no hassle, because it gets used alot by many people.
Having your scope fail is a surefire way to ruin a hunt.
4 moose is ALOT of weight.
We figure we had 600lbs of moose + 200lbs of ice in my Uncle's Silverado, plus guns and gear in the cab. It did fine, but I don't think it would have handled 2 more moose.
Did you all drive up with a trailer?
Made it to our butchering facility in upstate NY. Took 54 hours from time of packing coolers to get to the facility.
Ice cores in the bottles were about 30% to 50% when we rolled the coolers in the walk in freezers.
All in all, this plan worked pretty well. We didn't have to buy ice, and had...
I posted a link to some tough rubberized and insulated gloves earlier in this thread. Just search my post history in this thread. They are great gloves.
We just got off the Ferry for the first leg of the drive home.
My ice experiment is turning out well. We took 3 coolers up, and a 5 cu. ft chest freezer with 1400 watt small camping generator, and gas can. 2 days prior to leaving, I filled the freezer with water bottles (almost 200 bottles)...
Wrapping up our time here in Newfoundland, and starting the drive (and ferry ride) home tomorrow.
We had a fantastic hunt. Bulls were rutting, weather was amazing and the camp we hunted with was an awesome group of people.
Day 1: After getting in a day early we hunted hard on Saturday. 4 guys...
That's good info. I'm bringing one gas can. Ferry has regs that won't allow more than 1 can if gas. Not sure if they'll allow exceptions due to the storm. Hope there is gas on the other side for you.
Which border crossing did you go through, if you don't mind me asking?
Yes, the northern route looks very long and adventurous. My wife was protesting pretty heavily that I was even considering it....
Glad the NS to NL ferry is back up.
We'll be one day ahead up you. Crossing the night of the 29th. Will be at the Holiday Inn in Deer lake overnight for the 30th.
The Blanc-Sablon Quebec ferry is $10 to reserve a spot for truck and 2 people. I just put a reservation in as a backup plan.
Really not thrilled at the idea of driving 2100 miles just to get to the ferry, but it's the only other option for driving....
I am very much exploring this as a backup route.
Adds alot of miles (800 to 1000) to the trip, and the road is pretty remote. But, it looks like it's the only other option for crossing if the New Sydney ferry is down.
My Uncle and I are driving up to Deer Lake starting Wednesday for a hunt next week (Oct 1). Is anyone looking at taking the ferry from Quebec? It looks like it adds 1000 miles to the drive.
Edit to add. I am driving from VA, picking him up in Upstate NY on Wednesday.
Well, Planning on driving up to Deer Lake area for Moose hunt starting next saturday. And, this happens:

Sounds like a decent chance the Ferry is down for a while. Trying to put together contingency plans to drive up.
Has anyone driven the...
