It's simply about understanding elk. They are animals that are just doing what they want/need to do to reproduce. Yes, I have a TON of elk hunting experience so I can find elk no matter where we go, but anyone can do the same. Simply stop thinking as a human and start thinking like an elk. Which...
JFYI, my son and I heard 100's of bugles during 2nd season in CO this year. OTC public land, but we also never saw another hunter and we did see 40-50 legal bulls. You gotta be in the right place and away from the pressure.
Elk bugle all thru Oct. It depends more on where you are and if they are pressured or not. If you find unpressured elk with good B/C ratios then they will be bugling. If you're hunting close to a lot of people and or low bull densities then it's hit or miss.
Here are a couple more from the last couple years that I killed from "hunting elk" rather than calling.
There are a bunch of absolute elk killers out there, but one that you can watch and learn a TON from is Nate Simmons. watch all his western hunter episodes on elk and you'll see someone who...
I'd recommend learning to hunt elk rather than concentrating on calling. Calling is one small tool to use in elk hunting. I know it's glamorized by the youtube Doug Fluties, but if your goal is actually killing bulls you better have more than one tool in your belt. I do call, but it's usually...
Seriously?! That is the worst advice I've ever seen given in regards to elk hunting!!! More giant elk have been killed do to good glass than any other piece of equipment combined!! It is the SINGLE most import piece of equipment in elk hunting. Even tho I kill giant bulls every year, don't take...
So I went on the Utah F&G site yesterday and applied for my 2020 hunts. While applying it stated I had a current license and did not need to buy another to apply. Later in the day I got another email from the Utah F&G saying:
Your hunting license will expire on February 29. Don’t miss a day of...
I actually think it will have some affect. With the late draw there will be a lot of guys who have already drawn other tags and or worked out other plans prior to the WY draw. In my case I will be in for a lot of other tags ranging somewhere between 5-50%. I will also be in for the WY general...
You guys are overthinking it a bit. I know it's a lot of points, but all the info you need is on the WY fish and game site. If you look at harvest stats, public land, season dates and points to draw it's easy to see what sort of opportunity you will have. There really are no real big secrets. If...
I've hunted it, but I drew with 3 points not 11. When I hunted it, the little archery pressure there was had already pushed a lot of the elk onto private. If I lived in Casper and could hunt it archery and then 2 months rifle it might be worth it. As a NR I would not use 11 points on it. There...
Used to be... I was able to draw 5 WY elk tags in 7 years not too long ago. 3 of them being good LE tags and the other 2 general tags as 2nd choice. The good old days are gone. Marginally better odds now on some hunts, no better on others. I'm in for the regular general tag this year. That one...
The deer hunting or the move? ;)
The deer situation is so bleak in OR it is nowhere near worth it for me to buy a tag. I can see as many bucks in an afternoon in CO as an entire archery season in OR.
I actually won't be buying an elk tag this year for the first time ever as well. Hunting WY...
45 year Oregon resident until a couple years ago(WA). Still hunt OR OTC elk with my son. Will probably never buy and OR deer tag again if that helps answer your question.
I can assure you bulls don't care what "tube" you're using if you know how to use it. Don't get caught up in marketing. Probably more bulls killed with the good old wiffle ball bat(like mine :) ) than any of them. Just learn to call and any of them are going to work just fine.
