It's upper 90's going over 100 where we are in the OR desert, but we've been on a herd of more than 150 with bulls bugling since opening day. No shot for my son yet with so many elk spread out, but we'll stay on them in the heat until I have to leave for my elk hunts in ID, WY, MT this weekend...
Here is a story I wrote about hunting in that general area. It certainly is not an area to be taken lightly when hunting alone. My buddy was hunting 68 last year and ended up giving up during archery season because he got so freaked out about all the grizz encounters he was having. Nothing like...
Plenty of places to tent or trailer camp in the NF. Yes, you will have to be mindful of the bears that will be all around you. MY last concern would be the camping. The bears that will be around while hunting and packing out an elk are what you need to worry about.
I'm not trying to be a smart...
1 Stop watching youtube videos of guys that just run around the woods blowing calls at elk all day.

I have hunted WY a lot over the last 12 years(7 times). Just spent a couple weeks in the units you're asking about because I was mostly scouting for another species my dad and I have tags for, but also looking for elk, We also have WY general elk tags. I will leave it at this... We won't be...
Taking my dad on an antelope hunt around Big Piney. Trying to figure out what the deal is with the gas well roads on BLM. I'm actually out here looking around now, but am not super sure if you can travel across the roads or not. On OnX the are greyed out which usually mean not open, but then a...
You're going to regret it and if it's not a one time thing, you will ne looking at buying a SxS after you do it once. Just saying...
That's even leaving the Broke Back Mt analogy out of the discussion..
I'd never fly, but if you are thinking of it, you better look close a car/truck rentals. That has become a serious problem as of late. Some places do not even have them available as crazy inflated prices.
Decided to just keep mine even if I don't get to use it. ID makes in hardly worth it to return it. By the time you have to eat the license fees and 1/2 the tag fee it makes more sense to just hold onto it and maybe find a day or 2 to hunt.
Calf, yearling same thing... Still embarrassing someone would post that as one of their 80 "elk". "Low hanging fruit"! I think that is the mantra of the millennials, but I don't think you are one of them.
WTF? Who posts a pic of a calf they killed?! Talk about LOW hanging fruit!!! Did you just walk out and stab that poor baby?
I would have never let my son shoot something like that even when he wa 12. Or... even when he wa 6 if he could have had a tag.
WY is the choice hands down. Compare every metric and you'll see it wins each one. It's not really even close! ;) Just don't buy my property before I do. Nothing but suckers spending money on real estate right now.
There are plenty of elk. You will see lots of 5 points and small 6s. That's why most guys will shoot a sub 300" bull in the unit. They don't know how to stay off the release and can't pass up a lot of small bulls to find a good one. The better bulls will take some work to get to. Again, plenty...
You own 400 acres in WY and that is all the land you would hunt given a landowner tag? I don't think anyone has issue with landowners getting tags to hunt their own land. I think most have issues with landowners getting unit wide tags in areas that take away tags from everyone else. I'm not all...
