My favorite carbon bow is the PSE carbon air but the Mathews Vertix is lights out. IMO it's hands down the best bow out there right now. Like mentioned above the only knock is that it is slightly on the heavy side. Best of luck this season!
I use those EE Stronghold Mittens. I don't find myself hunting in weather much colder than upper 20s but they would great for keeping my hands warm and weigh nothing for those cooler glassing sessions.
Great review. Funny you've had reliability problems with Basemap and not OnX. My experience has been complete opposite where OnX has failed me in the field and never an issue with Basemap. I will add OnX customer service has been very quick (no later than next day) to reply and help fix the...
This from AK Troutbum.
Otherwise you're just shooting for the moon hoping to beat the odds with no guarantee of ever drawing. If you want to start building points you need to start applying in every state to maximize your chances. (Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico, Wyoming, Colorado, Montana...
I sleep with my food in the backcountry and have never had a problem. I will eat in my tent, wrappers and food go back inside their stuff sack and into my pack when done refueling. I would say there's something of a difference between camping in the backcountry vs established camping areas...
If you already have these broken in then you're good to go. I wouldn't change anything with season ~1 month away. You can pack out elk in tennis shoes if need be. The added support of the 4D's will be nice especially side hilling steep terrain. Best of luck!
Zillions of opinions on this topic. Hard to say if anyone's right or wrong in the common fixed vs mechanical debates. That said, I'm shooting Rage NC this season. Rage has treated me well for as long as I can remember so I shoot them with confidence. :p
Utah OTC elk tags are a tough hunt. If you can get access to private that will help immensely. My non-resident buddy arrowed a bomber 7x7 on the OTC tag a couple years back but had received permission from a private landowner.
I've done this twice and have had bad experiences both times. One was a WI whitetail shipping to my place in LA and the other was a CO elk going to Chicago. It is expensive ($600-900) but for the me the value lost is in being able to butcher your own animals. The butcher turned 90% of my...
These new TL inserts are a huge upgrade from the old 95g SS Shok inserts. I was getting pretty frustrated with the old Shoks not spinning true to the point where I was just about to switch systems (arrows, inserts, etc) all together. I've had zero issues with the TL thus far. Really digging 'em.
Agreed it is incredibly comfortable and although not whisper quiet it's certainly one of the quietest out there. The new one is fairly heavy compared to the old which deters me from upgrading...at least not right away.
Having the shoulder straps attach straight to the holder is a sweet upgrade. Thats the only flaw I've experienced, when it slips down my chest when I have my binos out glassing.
I would say almost darn near every unit that holds Coues deer has mule deer as well that can be hunted OTC. They just inhabit slightly different areas. Generally, look lower for mule deer and higher for coues. You will certain see them commingled on occasion. I hunted 22 last season for coues...
I try to drive as many roads in the unit as I can. As I'm doing this I'm jotting notes on my map where I'm seeing sign (tracks across dirt roads, old rubs) and the greenest (best feed) areas. I make sure to hike into areas of interest via my e-scouting. Spend both evenings and mornings glassing...
Some ideas to get lighter:
- go stove-less menu (save 0.84 lbs)
- quilt vs sleeping bag (save ~1.5 lbs)
- take out the nail clippers
- get rid of your four types of chaffing creams/powders (try anti-monkey butt powder, seriously a game changer for chaffing, far better than anything I've ever...
I'm a cabernet fan through and through with wild game meals. A couple super cheap California cabs I pick up from Whole Foods are Rickshaw ($12.99) and Quail Creek ($4.99). Enjoy!
I use both as they each have their pros and cons. I feel OnX is easier and faster to navigate and they have a much better topo map. I also like the way the trails are displayed with steepness by color while Basemap seems to be missing trails that OnX shows. OnX does glitch for me and without...
All personal preference. I find myself putting most emphasis on weight since I believe my ankles are made of rubber. They can twist and bend in weird contortions and never have an issue. I swap between trail runners and Solomon Quest 4D boots.
