I'd give Kuiu a look as I believe they are one of the lightest on the market. My pack weights right around 74oz total and I've done numerous 7-10 days trips with it. The new suspension system is also a huge improvement and performs well under heavy pack-out weight.
When I was there we had zero issues finding birds and filling tags. Shock gobbled birds in the evening to coordinate our morning hunt. You can find birds by hiking ridges but driving the FS roads will probably be more efficient. The snow can definelty be a factor. We woke to a fresh 18" the...
I've never used a ground sheet. Currently running a Gossamer Gear Thinlight foam pad under my Thermarest uberlite which doubles as my glassing pad. At only 2.5 oz it's a win/win. Haven't had any issues although the thinlight pad does collect pine needles like crazy so I do routinely need to pull...
You'll find both species, the Coues deer are general higher and mule deer in lower elevation. You'll certainly see other hunters but nothing to be discouraged about. Like hunting anywhere just be willing to hike off the road a bit. Tons of country, tons of opportunity.
Been there, living the majority of my adulthood in Mpls, Chicago and LA. My wife is "big city girl" and fortunately for me this summer I able to convinced her that we should move to Scottsdale, AZ. Seemed like a perfect compromise, in the city yet within striking distance of more public land...
If I was bringing an 11 year old I would look at units further south without the weather risks. Want to make the experience as enjoyable as possible for him.
I always used a floored tent in AZ because of all the creepy crawlies but have been tossing around the idea of trying my floorless. Would certainly be curious to hear from anyone that does use a floorless shelter in the SW desert.
I run an EE Enigma 20 degree quilt and comfortably sleep down into the mid 40s. Low 40s and into the 30s I start to layer up (stocking cap, socks, kuiu superdown). Mid 20s is my limit before I get too uncomfortable to sleep. Also need a more insulated pad at that juncture. (Right now, I'm...
I hunt western MN ducks every year and have done so for the last 10. I hunted second weekend this year and it was by FAR the toughest I've seen it. 5 of us in 3 mornings on the lake shot 21 total ducks. Usually we hunt 2 days and bag around 45-50 for reference. Still enjoyed my coffee and...
It really is going to depend on the country you are hunting. If you're never glassing more than a 3/4 - 1 mile then putting your 10x42s up on a tripod will work great but if you need to look further distances you'll want extra power.
I have a hard time sitting and glassing or hunting a single place for a long time. I usually get into my first area day 1, glass that evening and following morning until 10-11am. If I don't find what I'm looking for I hike mid-day to area 2, along the way looking for sign and stopping to glass...
These (tons of varieties on Amazon) are awesome. I don't know why anyone would buy expensive stalking shoes when you could use these triple purpose, cheap, light weight slippers. (y)
I've had good luck with the Locus Gear CP3 poles for the past 3 seasons and they are lighter than anything else out there at 10.5 oz for the pair.
I use the rubber tips. I would never use them trying to get close to game only for long hauls, steep up and down or heavy pack outs.
It was a Wisconsin whitetail forky buck using an open sight shotgun and slugs at age 12. I was hesitant to shoot at first glace but this was back in the day where if it had antlers you wrapped your tag on it. 120 yards, dead before it hit the ground. I'm still in amazement of that shot. So is my...
