    Portable Charger Question

Somewhere in the back of my brain is some knowledge that makes me feel like it would be more efficient to not fully charge devices off of my backup battery pack. Can anybody confirm this? It's hard for me to put into words but basically the last 10% is more difficult (inefficient) than the...

Bait as a Spot & Stalk backup

First off I want to thank you guys. This website has cut my backcountry learning curve tremendously. I am heading to Idaho on June 15th for a week of spring bear hunting. I will be spotting and stalking but I am considering setting up a bait with a camera on it and letting it soak for a few...

    What battery bank?

I typically hunt 5-7 days and was using an Anker 10,000 mah and carrying a 26w Anker solar panel. I upgraded to an Anker 20,000 mah and plan on dropping the panel. I run a Garmin InReach, Galaxy S8 Active and a Streamlight Bandit. I will know in about 6 weeks if that is going to be enough.

    Looking for lightweight tarp/rainfly

I second Seek Outside for a lightweight affordable tarp. I am personally considering the Gunnison to replace the cheap $10 tarp I ordered off the Geek app which has actually served me well and only weighs 10oz.

    Paria Outdoor Products Tarp

I don't own one but from reviewing their website I noticed a couple of things. Hydrostatic resistance is 5,000mm which is better than SO @ 3,000mm. It doesn't look like the corners are as reinforced as the SO tarps. My guess is it will work as expected for 90% and the other 10% are Kifaru or...

Idaho Spring Bear Hunt: Unit 1 vs 17

Probably, I was trying to access higher country so I could do some glassing. The snow was just too deep and I ended up heading back to my vehicle. It's so thick down low off of Highway 12 that you are either going to run right in to them or walk by them. I've got a drainage that I have been...

Help me build my sleep system!

My setup isn't for everyone but it works for me and it is fast to set up, lightweight, warm and cheap. Thermarest Z-Lite pad, cut down to what works for me ~8oz, military issue gore-tex bivy ~2lbs, Cabelas XPG 15 degree down bag 2 lbs 9oz (this is what the packaging states, my scale says 1 lb...

Fall Bear Idaho - Unit 17

I'm not sure where you are from or what kind of pressure you are used to but even during the first week of elk season we didn't see more than a handful of people. There is no way around it, it's a tough area to access and that turns a lot of people away. The best word of advice I can give you is...

    Idaho spring bear info

Here is a website where you can download any USGS topo for free. Pick the pre-90's versions, they have more information on them. https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/topoview/viewer/#4/39.98/-100.06 Before you pay for OnX, try AlpineQuest on your phone for free. I think it only works with Android but I...

Idaho Spring Bear Hunt: Unit 1 vs 17

A lot of people are saying that there is a ton of snow but according to the NOHRSC website (https://www.nohrsc.noaa.gov/nsa/) it's substantially less than last year. At least for the stations, I have been checking in 17. From the graph it looks like around 70" @ Savage Pass and last year was...

Awesome, thanks. Very few companies make bivys.

MT Spring Bear (First Western Hunt)

This won't be a popular opinion but if you are looking to go cheaper for a lightweight tarp, I ordered a 5'x7' tarp from the GEEK app for $10 that weighs 10oz after I added a few extra grommets. Walmart sells a similar tarp but it's blue, in case that matters to you. I'm not about to use a...

    DIY Top Quilt-Costco

How is the durability of that SOL bivy? I currently use the military issue gore-tex bivy. I would like to lighten my load but I am having a hard time figuring out what to go with. I've considered the SOL Escape or Escape pro, the new Outdoor Research Helium Emergency bivy, OR Helium or OR...

Help Interpreting Aerial - Selway/Bitterroot Area of Idaho

From what I am seeing on the F&G Hunt Planner Map, it is not inside of a burn area. If I can just throw one more question out there, I've heard of glassing avalanche chutes for feeding bears. Does anyone have experience doing this? Is it something I should look at? I am guessing that is what...

Help Interpreting Aerial - Selway/Bitterroot Area of Idaho

So it is possible for a burn to be so hot that the area either takes a longer time to recover or doesn't recover? I was kind of thinking that but wasn't sure this was a possibility. I am curious to see what it looks like once I am on the ground. Thanks for the help guys.

Help Interpreting Aerial - Selway/Bitterroot Area of Idaho

I am planning my annual trip to Idaho for spring black bear and I was hoping to get some help interpreting what I am looking at on these aerial images. Why would this area be void of vegetation? In the area I am looking, I would expect these areas to be green. I am guessing that they are burned...

Idaho Spring Bear Hunt: Unit 1 vs 17

This will be my 3rd season hunting Unit 17 for spring bear. I've seen bear but I haven't closed yet. I can't send you a private message (I'm guessing there is a minimum post count). If you want to give me your email, I can share some tough lessons learned. A couple things off the top of my...

    Spring bear hunting

From my experience of hunting the Selway-Bitterroot area for spring bear, you aren't getting very high in May. This year I am flying in on June 15th. I'm basically learning by trial and error, 1 week a year at a time.
