Appreciate your candor here. I’m in the situation where I do not have a .223 but am leaning heavily toward buying one. My 7 REM Mag is expensive to shoot and I also like to let it cool down between groups. I don’t plan to just totally hang up the 7 REM Mag, but it’s becoming prohibitive to shoot...
I can answer these.
In order:
Lightweight 7mm Rem Mag
7RM - 50 to 75 depending on reloading components
.223 - As many as possible
I’d like to practice long distance fundamentals on a rifle that’s not shooting a magnum cartridge out of a lightweight platform. I do intend to take those...
Not sure your budget but that SG Sky Solus 1P looks pretty sweet. I saw it at SHOT Show this week while I was there. Very well thought out design, lightweight, and SG makes solid gear. Can’t comment on durability since I’ve never owned one.

I asked this exact question in a thread late last year. My decision was to get a .223 with a brake for use while plinking. Unfortunately, where I live does not allow suppressors otherwise I’d go that route.
For me the decision was based on ammo availability, mild recoil, and the fact that my...
True. I just think if a 1:8 is available I might as well err on the side of caution and go that route. Plus, it’s just an excuse to get my first Tikka.

I’d love to go that route (I’m a franchi fan) but really want a faster twist. I live in a lead-free state so if I hunt with this rifle I’d like to have the fast twist for long, mono bullets.

Following because I’m looking for the same. Ideally I’d like the barrel to be threaded but am willing to have that done later. Was looking at the Franchi but the 1:9 twist was a dealbreaker. Too bad because I have their Affinity 12ga and love it.
Appreciate that. May go the Tikka route and find someone local to thread it. Was hoping for something right out of the box but getting it threaded isn’t a dealbreaker.

I think something like the Kuhl resistor pant fits the bill for the majority of what you are going to do. I’ve worn those up and down the West Coast and into the mountain states for hunts. If you are going to get into the heavier stuff in the southwest you may need to get a specific pair of...
Softshell is a Jack of all trades, master of none. IMO there are many other options that do their intended purpose better than a soft shell. Are you going to bring a packable rain layer just in case? Then the water resistant ability of the softshell is pointless. Bringing warm mid layer to hike...
I think it’s a good place to start for those of us that don’t have tarps. Cleaned an elk this year in direct sunlight, and nobody I was with had a tarp to provide some quick shade. That was the moment for me I knew I needed to have something in my bag like this. Not saying this is the best...
Sorry to hijack this thread but I have a question that could likely be answered by those “watching” here.
I’m looking for an out of the box shooter bolt action .223 that’s threaded. My price range is <$1k without optics - not looking for combos. I’d also like a 1:8 twist since I may eventually...
Nice! Good setup. I’d only mention that thunderstorms come in fast on the mountain. Maybe want to have a packable rain layer available to keep from getting soaked. You could even swap out the Softshell for that if you’re looking to save ounces.

I’m not saying anything new here, but you should reconsider your setup. Packing in to temps you mentioned is absolutely brutal. You can’t defrost/dry your gear, warm up at night, or have the safety of a car to get you out of a tight spot. Plus, there really is something to be said about the...
What are you guys looking forward to seeing from SHOT Show next week? Seems like some pretty awesome gear getting announced and/or marketed at the show this year.
