Best way to learn hunting with stock

I have owned horses in the past for recreational riding and some minimal cattle work but all back before I started hunting out west (I live in West Tennessee). Since I only have a couple weeks to spend in the mountains every year and haven’t been in the points game for more than a handful of...

What's the deal with KUIU? Disappointing!!

Most companies won’t exchange sizes on sale items. Otherwise people would buy whatever size was available (if their size was sold out) and just exchange them later. A bunch of exchanges can cost a company quite a bit just in handling costs.

    Dogs in Bear Country

Hopefully I don't find out but if I do I sure hope my dog stays quiet. The leash is entirely for the GW's as I never have her leashed up hunting around here.

    Dogs in Bear Country

"Never posted this same questions as I wasn’t ready for the Pandora’s box of responses. You have no clue someone’s credibility on the topic. And it’s probably prone to the same concept of Choosing a Bear Pistol. “Well...after it comes at me...and I’ve shot it 3 times...then I load solids...

    Wyoming region H or G?

I'll be hunting deer in one of those two regions in the next 1-3 years. If I decide to go next year it will be H since I have enough points to pull a tag. If I decide I want to do other hunts instead for a couple of years and can draw G I will. As a novice mule deer hunter I won't be holding out...

    Dogs in Bear Country

Thanks for the input guys. I'm not worried about getting a ticket as I make a point to call the local GW's in the units I plan to hunt and ask them if there would be any issues with me taking my dog. Also not too worried about my dog running off and pissing off a bear since she stays on a lead...

    Dogs in Bear Country

I hunt with my Lab a lot and really enjoy taking her on my trips out west. She is a well trained waterfowl dog so general obedience and responsiveness is not an issue. When I'm still hunting whitetails I frequently have her with me (she heels great and when I stop she sits immediately) and never...

Lots of cool bucks on here! In other news its crazy how few narrow bucks have been killed since the invention of the wide angle lens...

    Vehicle Advice

I wouldn’t be afraid of a 2nd gen Explorer as long as it has the V8. Lots of power but still small enough to be nimble on tight trails. I bought one with 130K on it when I was in college for $2,500 and drove it for six years, put over 100K on it, ran into a few deer, a couple trees, rolled it...

For the guys who use UTV's...

I don’t currently have a utv but can definitely see the advantage. I need my vehicle to be something I can drive out west from Tennessee with decent road manners and load capacity for a couple guys, gear, and hopefully coolers of meat. Since it has to get me back to Tennessee I tend to be more...

Colorado 3rd verse 4th season choice

I agree with this. The third could be awesome in 2021 and 2022 if the weather cooperates. Wouldn't be surprised if the top end quality takes a hit in a bunch of units after that due the great dates and what I am assuming to be similar tag quotas to what are currently in place. Success rates...

    Disgraceful Hunters

Any of you guys duck hunt the Mississippi or eastern flyways? Worst behavior from hunters I have ever seen! There are a couple of local wildlife management areas that the state had to put on a draw system out of fear of someone getting shot over hunting spots... Slashed tires, stolen gear...

How much are you reasonably willing to spend on hunting each year?

2-3K generally. We live in a small house and drive used cars to free up income for things we want to do. It's nice to be finally getting to the point that I don't spend as much on gear annually and have more available for tags and gas.

Ethical Shots - just because your buddy can does mean you shouldn't say something

I think any of the guys I hunt with would actually limit themselves more having me or another guy with them. We also shoot together regularly so we aren’t going to try a shot that the other guy knows is a Hail Mary. The real question is are you hunting with guys who have to ethics to not take...

Elk packers in the Jackson/Hoback/Alpine WY area

Yeah, when I was saying how frequently I would like to hunt the area that includes elk and deer hunts as well as maybe getting lucky and occasionally pulling a random tag.

Elk packers in the Jackson/Hoback/Alpine WY area

Thanks, that's exactly my plan. Still hopeful I may get a few leads before I just start googling and calling random outfitters. I figured we would end up packing to a trail and potentially waiting a day or two but that's still less hassle than keeping a horse 12 months a year and hauling them...

Elk packers in the Jackson/Hoback/Alpine WY area

They are general units so about as available as a non-resident can get in wyoming. Obviously lots of other options but I'm also interested in hunting mule deer in the same area and figure between the two I should be able to get a tag in the same area 2 out of 3 years.
