The place to spend your money is on good binos and scope. Elk come out late, especially big bulls and go in early. To ensure your best opp at success you need good light gathering in low light when they are present.
with 16 points I would spend the extra $100 and join Huntin Fool, Epic or one of the online consultants and talk to a hunt consultant who knows the units, draw odds and outfitters.
If I was going to fork out $10K -15K on a dream hunt and my "last hunt" I wouldn't choose NM. To many
experiences with hit or miss guides. There is an all too common practice of below par outfitters and last second
guide hires that I wouldn't burn my "last hunt" on that. I would contact one...
It all depends on what unit he can draw. I have been told what drew with 10 last year will be 12 this year due to changes coming up.....I would suggest using one of the hunting online services like GoHunt, Epic or Huntinfool to find out the right unit/outfitter for 12 points this year.
Correction - $11K for a 1 on 1. He is well respected though. I haven't booked with him yet but he is great to talk to. Very up front about what you will see and get. The only issue I have with this hunt is you only really get 5 hunting days because it is 1 day in and 1 day out.
I hunted with James Whitescarver of Montana Rivers and Ridges 5 yrs ago. Great guy, very hard worker.
Lodge was first class. Food was very good. My only negative is he hunts a unit that is very crowded with other
hunters. I really liked James though and he worked hard.
Best Outfitter line this year. " We don't serve a big breakfast, just oatmeal or Cereal. We don't need our clients needing to take a crap after hiking in right at shooting light..."
There a few online services. HuntinFool, Epic and others that you can join to find recommended outfitters.
You will probably get some responses here also. My MT outfitter who was awesome retired. Once you
get some responses, even from the services get a list of references and spend the time...
First Hunting ammunition gets impossible to get and prices go through the roof if you can find it.
Then hunting tags get harder and more expensive to get. Lastly politicians who know little to nothing about the difference in an assault rifle and a hunting rifle increase pressure on gun...
Depends on the District but I have done it 75% of the time in the Southwest corner of MT.
Elk is the priority but if I see a buck that needs to be in my freezer he goes down first. It also
depends on whether you are early season or late. The later the more likely the bucks will be down...
I have driven for 20 yrs due to the hassles of firearms on planes, making sure your gear gets there and the very high cost of air freight for your coolers on the return flight. Not to mention if your coolers don't make the flight the meat can get ruined. If I am hunting where they can...
I have used Guided hunts for 25 plust years. Mostly great experiences. This season in Colorado we stayed at a great lodge, great food, really hard working good guides but the elk weren't cooperating. I was lucky to have
a cow insurance tag and shot a cow. My other buddy shot a Bull but we...
And that is why it is called Elk hunting not shooting. When you book an outfitted hunt you got good lodging, great food and great effort from your guides. Unfortunately you can't always get cooperative Elk..that is why they are so much fun to hunt and so challenging. You appear to have...
I would agree the 338 WM is a good short range Elk caliber but it doesn't compare to many others over 350 yds.
Inside 200yds Elk hate it. Over that I far prefer 300 WM or 300RUM which is my favorite.
