I would go to Epic, Huntin Fool or one of the paid services and use their research to find a unit / Outfitter that matches your needs. I wouldn't waste 14 pts and all the time/money you have invested without getting the best input and use a good outfitter to maximize your experience.
It...
Finally drew with 13 pts. I am relieved to be out of the points race. Pretty crazy looking at the drawing odds.
Drew a unit with 13 pts that drew with 10 last year. Can't imagine where this is all going.
And what is sometimes lost in the chase for premium units/point creep is the real goal a good Elk hunt.
Any Bull Elk is a trophy Elk to the guy that hiked the mountains / trails to get him.......I have hunted many
"Non" premium units and had great hunts/experiences and hunted two premium trophy...
180 grain copper works fine on Elk. I have killed many bulls with 180 TTSX.
It sucks that the ammo shortage makes finding your favorite round such a pain in the ass.
I wish I hand loaded......
If I was booking a possible once in a lifetime Outfitter hunt for rifle I would book opening week somewhere.
All things being equal you get the element of surprise where they are not yet aware the Thundersticks can reach out beyond Archery range.
I personally prefer Montana over Colorado...
I brought a Moose back from B. C. No problems with the US Customs at the boarder. Just filled out the paperwork and very quick inspection of the Antlers, Meat and I was on my way.
They were far more detailed inspecting my rifles on the way in.
You are correct in calling me out on that. I don't have any personal experience with them but have had
bad experiences with mass mailing and multi state outfitters. I stand corrected.
I got the brochure in the mail. Looked at it. It appears to me to be a standard mass mailing hoping they can hook some hunters into shelling out money. No mention of the actual guides or who you would be dealing with. Too many different ranches and locations. I would believe you book...
Buy Super tags in all states that offer them and while you are at it go to Epic, Huntin Fool and buy raffle tickets for hunts offered....all great odds. I am kidding of course
300 WM is a great elk cartridge with many options for loads from many different manufacturers.
You can use many different grns and bullet types. I prefer 180 Nosler or Barnes X. Both fly well.
It is such a common round that you can generally find the ammo for it you are looking for.
I have...
If they smell you they are gone in a second from any distance. If you are standing erect , skylined or not trying any stealth I agree with all above. I think if you are quiet, stealthy, move slowly, the 400 yd mark is where you have to really be on your game to get inside.
Obviously a good pair of broken in boots is money well spent. I really like the Solomon GTX 4D. Light. Comfortable. You can usually find them on sale for $200 or so. The boot debate will be as lively as the rifle debate.....:)
I love Leupold scopes. I have VX-111 all the way up to VX-6 on my newer rifles. Best bang for the buck in Scopes in my opinion. I like the 50mm objective for Elk hunting / light gathering.
I am a big fan of the 300 WM with 180 grn or bigger for Elk. They don't like it. Nosler Partition or...
