I will say the Idaho State troopers love pulling over California plates. Been pulled over twice going the
speed limit on my way to Montana. Each time they just checked my registration, looked inside the truck and let me go. The last time the trooper asked me if I was smoking pot. I wasn't...
Not trying to start a fight on this subject I just find that the key to all of us enjoying the outdoors is consideration. If I roll up to a trailhead and see 4 trucks there, I don't hike in and sit right above or next to the guys that put in the effort to get there first.
If I had dogs to run...
Common decency is to respect everyone's right to the outdoors. When you run dogs during a one week limited entry Elk season you are being selfish. You have 50 other weeks you could be doing that. Everyone has decsions every day in life to do what they are legally allowed to do but respect...
the only thing worse than running into other hunters everywhere is when you run into hikers, campers or non hunters during hunting season disrupting the animals. I had a limited entry tag once where a guy was running his dogs practicing for mountain lion season during Elk season.
His comment...
More elk have been killed with a 270 than most other cartridges...just not at 300 or 400 yds.
Know your gun, shoot it well and any elk hit in the heart or lungs will die no matter what caliber.....
shoot the largest caliber you are comfortable with and shoot accurate.
If you choose a lesser caliber acknowledge the range limitations and live within them.
I believe you should understand the energy required to kill an elk and abide by it. You owe that
to the animal.
If you hit an Elk in the...
I am 62 and have been hunting elk for 30 yrs. I always stay in decent shape and start getting into Elk shape 90 days before the season starts. I have used Guides on all my trips and have yet to have a guide wish I could keep up. I agree 100% it is mostly mental. Guys have a hard time on...
Calaveras Road off 680 has a Tule Elk herd back toward the reservoir. I have called there before.
The only difference is when you are calling Elk that are not hunted and have not been hunted is
it really a gauge as to how you are doing? They are not wary at all.
Rifle - Hunters road hunt more often. Stay away from roads.
I think you can be a bit more aggressive with Rifles as you can close to 300-400 yds pretty quickly compared to stalking within 40 -50 yds with a bow. When you have to get that close you need to be very stealth. Not so much at 300 -...
Well if they are not growing really big this year I will just turn my 2023 Wyoming tag back in......not :p
Elk hunting is Elk hunting. I had a tag in New Mexico in what was supposed to be a banner year for antler growth and the season fell on a full moon and it was very difficult to locate...
Good story. A successful hunt isn't always about the score or "tagging out". A great experience with your
72 yr old dad can't be replaced by a dead elk.
Better luck next time you learned a lot.
