The Walk-In Area that was south of Lake DeSmet disappeared a couple years ago when the land was sold.
A word of advice, all the roads you see on OnX may not be public roads.

I have had days where a mile or two seemed like 20!
Interesting you mentioned seeing a fox at the Petrified Tree; a few years ago we saw a fox that had mange near the Petrified Tree . It was the sorriest looking critter I have seen in a while.
I know what you mean about seeing some critters...
The Petrified Tree "attraction" that is just west of Tower Junction is only a mile, if that, from the highway. So, if you drove 20 miles down a road to see a petrified tree you wasted a lot of time.
We have seen black bears along the road to the petrified tree that I as talking about...
The road from Canyon to Tower Junction is closed for the 2021 season to complete major road construction so accessing the Mt. Washborn trail is not possible this summer/fall.

You will see elk and bison for sure, and there is a good chance you will see bears, especially if you have good optics. Also a chance you will see wolves if you spend some time in the Lamar or Hayden Valleys.
You could have elk and/or bison walk through the campground at Mammoth.

Good advice here!
I have seen the 10X42 SLC's in three of the five stores since Dec 1. I know one of those stores no longer has any in inventory.

The monies collected from wildlife violations go to the schools in the couple states (WY and NE) I have lived in.
It has been difficult to recruit game wardens for a few years now, and with the current anti-law enforcement attitude we have seen the last few months it will only get more...
Swarovski no longer makes the SLC 10X42 binoculars. They are being made by Kahles (sister company of Swarovski), but Kahles products don't seem to be available in the U.S.

Depending on where you hunt, keep in mind that the locations you saw elk during your summer scouting trip may not be the places where they are during the hunting season, especially during the rifle season.
By the time the rifle season starts the grasses have cured at higher elevations, the elk...
