It had been about 10yrs since I went back to Maine to deer hunt. This year I decided I needed to take my boys back and hunt with my old man again. He's had a rough couple of years and figured I had better do it. Three years ago he was diagnosed with Parkinsons, last year he had shoulder surgery...
I never filtered water while growing up in Maine. Here in Alaska there's been times when I haven't, but I usually do. I always filter water for my family though. I've always wondered if I didn't get giardia by luck or if some people have a natural immunity to it. A friend of mine got it from...
I'm usually hunting where I'm not worried about others seeing me. Usually I'm just concerned with the best place to setup in case of weather. I don't want camp to get blown away on me!
Sitting in this spot where my dad is, I've spotted sheep, wolves, coyotes, wolverines, bears, moose (shot a couple), and 10's of thousands of sandhill cranes migrating just overhead. Pretty cool spot.
This has been a good read. My shoulder has had issues since high school. Being a baseball pitcher at a time when there wasn't as much thought towards proper warmup and form has caught up to me. The pain has gotten worse since last fall. Not sure what I did but I know sleeping on my stomach...
I grew up in Maine and spent a considerable amount of time in that area. I generally went up there to fish the West Branch of the Penobscot, but also some hunting in the fall. If you want to fish, there are tons of small brooks and ponds that are filled with brook trout in and out of the park...
My index finger and thumb on my right hand are the worst. They don’t burn but hurt like I smacked them with a rock or something. That usually lasts for about an hour then I’m good to go for the rest of the day. Years of working in the cold and ice/ cold weather fishing without gloves took a...
I was on my way back from a late season fishing trip to the Katmai area flying in my friends 206. He had given me the controls for a while and I was trying to keep things level. We were between Lake Illiamna and Lake Clark at about 3,000' when I looked out at the wing and saw the ice starting...
I've been contemplating one of those, especially when they've been on sale for $200 off. The biggest turnoff to me is the weight. They are heavy even before adding a stove. I think they would be pretty bombproof and comfortable if you have the ability to transport it comfortably.
I spoke with a local boot shop here in Anchorage. They said they can do it but they have to "boil" the boot to soften the rand. I'll admit that it sounds like some awful torture to inflict on my boot, but if it works it's better than buying new boots or wrecking my feet.
I'm pretty sure that after I turned 40 my feet "grew", especially my right one. My Kenetreks fit perfect last year and now my right boot is tight, especially in it's width. I'm wondering if the rubber rand allows for them to be stretched at all. If nothing else I'll bring them to a boot shop...
If all that was holding me back from hunting with an heirloom gun was some porting, i'd chop it and never look back. It's your gun now and lopping off 2 inches of barrel isn't going to take away from it's sentimental value.
For the cheechakos, here is a visual of 1002 area of ANWR and the coastal plain. The pads woudn't even be a pinhead on that map. The pictures and videos that the anti-drilling crowds put out are never of the actual area that would be drilled. I respect folks opinion of not wanting to drill...
Not expensive or flashy but HH Impertech always comes with me whether I'm hunting or fishing. My jetboil is an original that my wife bought me when they first came out. I've boiled ALOT of water and made barrels of coffee with that thing without a hiccup.
I shoot lots of grouse and ptarmigan with my 10/22 and 22/45. What part of the state will you be in? The Denali Highway has some great scenery and ptarmigan hunting. Spruce grouse are all over the place. Pretty much everybody seems to hunt them with a .22 up here. I love eating ptarmigan...
I just checked on a different computer that wasn't logged in and it came up for me. I just switched to imageshack recently so maybe I did something wrong.
Last fall I put my sons name in for a DC485 tag and he drew one. We took the hunters safety course together over the winter and spent even more time at the range. He has hunted with me the last two years but this hunt was going to be just for him.
On Sunday we headed left the house around...
If I recall from another forum, Luke Moffat and his wife have killed moose and brown bears with the lowly .308 and 180gr factory Federal Fusions fodder. They've worked just fine for me too. Pick the one that shoots good and bring home some meat.
Wow, what a great hunt! Congratulations to the both of you! There is nothing quite like spending quality time with your kids out in the field. My 11 yr old boy drew his first caribou tag this year. The anticipation is killing me!
