    Backpacking old dudes

That’ll be fun. Never spent much time there, just day trips but it was grande on all accounts.

The spotter bug is getting me

I intentionally bought a heavy Swarovski spotter so I would quit packing it. I'm not worried about inches of horn most years. Anything I can reach in a day I can determine if I want him with good binoculars. Have fun.

    Solo Elk Quartering

I tend to use the head as my anchor point but most of the elk I kill will roll if you let them. I am inspired not by killing elk but by having guys watch me from one of the turnouts on the logging road as I climb 1600 feet in a mile. Most of the time they are there to take a look, most say...

Barb wire fence around blind for Cattle?

Found a monkey in our room on our recent trip to Africa. Open the door and back away, they'll leave. Start chasing them and they run the walls and get the squirts. Don't chase the monkeys away and don't leave a door open even for a minute

    Walla Walla Archery Elk Oregon

I can't remember ever seeing this much grass, normally the hills are brown before I would head to Alaska, end of May. Still mostly green but that will change here in the next week Focus your efforts south of the 65 road, from Yellow Jacket west to the table springs trail. Even when I was running...

    Walla Walla Archery Elk Oregon

Name doesn't ring a bell but I've always been terrible at remembering names. Faces I'm good at. I was up there last week just poking around for a couple days. No movement until after dark but I saw two definite shooters moving to their beds at first light. I haven't looked at success from last...

    Oregon Roosevelt vs. Oregon Mule

The Walla Walla unit has some great bucks, look up Government mountain road. Quite a few white tailed as well. Wenaha is decent, look in the breaks of the Grande Rhonde. I see more deer in Mt. Emily, if you go there focus on the east slope, as close to private as you can get. The wife would...

    Moose hunting tips

That wouldn’t be bad at all, I was thinking more along the lines of those boggy no bottom ponds.

    450 Bushmaster Recoil

I have one on an M4 platform. Recoil is surprisingly light. Accurate and fast double taps are easy to pull off. Carried it in Alaska in the boat or plane. It's hell on porcupines. Never shot a bear with it.

    Front Sight Firearms training BANKRUPT

Thats unfortunate. I didn’t always agree with some of the things they taught, but I always learned something and of course maintained my proficiency. I can see where it may start getting tougher and more expensive to find legitimate training options.

    Antlers growing yet?

No elk or white tails yet, these mule deer are already driving the wife nuts. If they dont stay out of her garden she’ll kill them all she says

Ideas on tiring out bird dogs when you can’t hunt them

They are both 11 years now, teaching house manners will help. I’ve had GSPs since the mid 70s, I always forget what the first three years or so are like. Have fund enjoy the ride.

Good, I hope that will be enough Points. I didn’t do much winter scouting this year, but at this point I think the herd wintered well. Yes get in touch, I missed a request last year but I was already in Alaska. I’m retired from guiding so I’ll be spending some time up in the unit this year...

Ideas on tiring out bird dogs when you can’t hunt them

It’s tough to find time, just one of those things. I took my dogs to Alaska every year, my guiding days were long days. I ran them every morning and every night. I didn’t have to travel, I just got up an hour early, just had to watch for grizz while we double timed a three mile. Any thing you...
