As an eastern hunter accustomed to the tight confines of the "big woods", I did not have a spotter nor any real experience using one prior to my BC mountain goat hunt last August. I added a spotter (Swarovski 20-65x) at the last moment (a deal I couldn't turn down) just before leaving for the...
Great thread to window shop.
Do Tikka magazines need any modification to shoot the same parent case?
For example, will 280 and 35 Whelen feed from 270/30-06 magazines?
In the seven days I spent on my mountain goat hunt in B.C. two weeks ago, we could bank on seeing goats in pretty much the same area every day in the three drainages we were hunting. We noted some "wanderers" who moved in and out, but generally speaking we saw the resident goats almost every day.
I shared this on Hunting BC because I felt it was most relevant there, but some may appreciate reading it here too.
One of my lifelong dreams has been to hunt the mountains of Canada's west. I've had the good fortune of whitewater kayaking, canoe tripping, rock climbing/mountaineering, and...
Put down my money today on a pair of Swarovski SLC 8 x 42 binoculars - thanks to everyone for the feedback, definitely helped solidify my decision.
I knew I would always regret it if I "settled" on this one so I said ^%$ it and bought the Swaros.
If I elect to go the "one rifle route" I am considering an X-Bolt Pro instead of the "regular" Stainless Stalker.
Wondering if any members here can provide their perspective on whether the X-Bolt Pro upgrades are good value or if I am simply better off with a "garden variety" X-Bolt stainless...
I've been looking to upgrade my binoculars this spring as I have "made do" with a very entry level pair for years and a potential western hunt this August will demand much better optics.
After the recent passing of my grandfather, I learned he left each of his grandchildren and...
Thanks everyone for your feedback.
I'm giving some serious thought to shrinking the "combo" to just one rifle - an X-Bolt Pro in 308.
Stoked with 165 grain TTSX's, this should take care of anything in North America I ever point it at.
With my first western mountain hunt (British Columbia mountain goat) being closer to reality, I am seriously considering digging deep for a new pair of Swarovski (or similar quality) binoculars. Hunting whitetails in the thick woods of Ontario and New York has meant that an old pair of Nikons...
The universe works in mysterious ways some times ... on the very day my grandfather (without question the source of my passion/drive to hunt) passed away, the news came in that my friend in British Columbia is able to host me and we're moving ahead with an application for a mountain goat hunt in...
Thanks everyone - this thread was a much needed distraction as my grandfather passed peacefully this morning.
As an eastern deer hunter, I have a 243 X-Bolt and BLRs in 7mm-08 and 308 (one has a 1 - 4 x scope, the other a red dot) so my "quick and fast" hunting is well covered.
I'm thinking...
Rokslide folks, I'm looking at buying two new rifles as a form of "retail therapy" and looking to discuss rifles as a bit of an escape.
My grandfather (87 years old) has only a few days left. His hunting stories of burly big woods whitetail bucks were what sparked my passion for hunting and...
I would like to tap into the collective Rokslide knowledge. I've posted this in the main forum and it is not an entirely "species specific" question.
My wife and I work as high school teachers in Ontario, Canada. Although my wife does not share my passion for hunting, we do a lot of...
Considering a Tikka Compact as a handy lightweight "big woods" rifle for whitetail deer. I read the Rokslide article about making one a lightweight mountain rifle and was intrigued.
I know it is designed for youth and smaller shooters. Any issues with "regular sized" folk shooting it?
Looking to add two Tikkas in the calibers listed above. One would be set up for mountain deer hunting (7mm-08 or 7mm Remington Magnum) and the second would be set up for mountain big game (elk, moose) (338 Federal or 338 Winchester Magnum).
I don't expect I would ever shoot at a game animal...
Looking for clarification on what size of cooler is needed to store a deer. Here in Ontario, Canada typical dressed bucks go anywhere from 150 lb to 250 lb plus for a whopper. I'd like to a have a cooler capable of storing all the meat (field dressed using the gutless method) from a deer to...
I have a gun safe of modern rifles (3 Tikkas), but lately have been intrigued by some older "classic" rifles. In particular, the Husqvarna rifles (of various models) from the 1930 - 1960s have caught my eye.
Does anyone here use these rifles (or similar vintage rifles) hard in the backcountry...
