    Fire or no fire

Last elk hunt, no fire, just stove and stars. Bowhunting ,sometimes, a hot tea can be nice after a hard day of just out of range deer .

    Single Shot Rifles

Henry rifle single shot, with the iron sights, looked appealing to my minimalist nature. The reports of the trigger partially deterred me.

    prepare for backcountry

New Alpinism, great book. Climbing Mr Wheeler, off trail in trees with some deep snow , met a 68 yr old. He was going up his 3rd time in a week, training for a Canadian peak. He recommended it. One big take away: low intensity cardio, like just hard enough to talk w a bit of difficulty. My...

Integral rail mounts on tikka vs top mounts

On a Tikka 3x, would it not be more durable to use the integral rail system? Scope is, of course, the SWFA 6x 42. , and rifle caliber is 6.5 cm. My goal is durability of platform for mtn hunts ( no iron sights for backup is new to me). I see the Roksliders mentioning the Talley mounts, and I...

Spare Magazine or not Backcountry Sidearm

AZ_Hunter, I hear you on options. Had a long stalk, trailing mulies, end with helicopters and BP trucks busting a gang less than a mile out made me like extra ammo.

Would you hunt with a cheap rifle?

I am rough on stocks. I do backpack hunt. Lost a Marlin 336 front sight cover tumbling, carrying out a small coues in near dark, and later cracked the rear stock. Took an heirloom bird gun, o/u type, mtn lion hunting, and fell, slipped, denting a tad the lower barrel. Friend thinks I am nuts...

    Hunting pants

Yes, in parts of Arizona, comfortable, lightweight hot weather synthetic pants are good for about one year. The Fjallraven Vidda concept of reinforced knees, high poly %, seems on track. (The plant know as "catsclaw" is aptly named. On a scouting trip in the Mazatal Mountains, catsclaw did a...

Attrition rate of newby traditional archers

I have seen two trad hunters in about 12 years hunting in AZ. One being guided. I agree with all about the reasons people quit trad. (In Arizona, bucks only. That detail regarding harvests confirms my orientation towards process. I make my gear, homemade primitive bows, mulefat shafts, and...

    Durable, long lasting hunting pants

I can get a year out of Prana Zions, but that is plenty, considering the sharper rocks of southern Arizona. Seat wears out, and the knees develop small holes. I will sorta scoot down a hill, and crawling on hands and knees does happen.
