I've found Kuiu sizing to be very consistent.
I bought a 97 hoody this fall. I absolutely fell in love with it in terms of comfort. But I wore it UNDER another layer and walking through pine trees got several snags in the fabric. Very disappointed with the durability.
I had problems with...
Klymit Static V is the most comfortable pad I've slept on, hands down (but I haven't slept on them all).
After my first trip with the Static V, I came home and threw all my previously favorite pad on ebay.
I'm not a big fan of synthetic neck gaiters like the Peloton 97. If you pull synthetic ones up over your mouth and breathe in them for a while, they start to smell. I use a FL neck gaiter.
I shot two does with an 87 gr Sierra HP out of a .25-06. Both went down hard, but the internal damage was so massive, I decided not to use them anymore. Too much meat destroyed. I could definitely see them blowing up on bone.
I seem to stay wetter longer when putting a synthetic base or tight-fitting mid layer over wool. I like wool/wool or synthetic/synthetic. My favorite is the wool blends like Kuiu has.
I'd ditch the wool/synthetic combo. For some reason unknown to me, layering a synthetic base over a wool one results in moisture problems. I ran into that last year when wearing a Patagonia R1 over a FL Llano. I couldn't get the R1 to dry out very fast. This year, I went wool/wool or...
What do you mean "off?"
I'm going to trust a ballistics lab over a handloader 10 times out of 10. Just because Robby got 3400 and his gun didn't blow up doesn't mean it is a safe load.
I would say just the opposite. The Guides are warmer and do a better job blocking wind than the Timberlines. If I put my mouth up to the fabric and try to blow air through, the Guides win. Actually, the Sitka Mountain Pant beats the Timberlines too with that test.
The pressure-tested data from Alliant shows the WSM/150 Partition at 3088 and the 270 Win at 3022 with the same bullet. What kind of velocities are you seeing with the 26/150 combo in a WSM?
Shooters reporting 3050 fps with 150 grain bullets and RL-26 out of a standard .270 Win. makes the WSM a little less appealing, to me anyway.
But its a great cartridge for western hunting, no doubt (as are many).
At some point, I got used to the idea that my pack had what I needed to hunt effectively and get out of a bad situation, and it weighs what it weighs. I don't put it on the scale anymore because it doesn't matter. It has the stuff I need so I'm going to carry it. I no longer mentally run...
I've never hunted 270 but will say this: a lot of people have a misconception that rut hunting is easy and even big bucks will act stupid. That is not the case. Hunt hard and hunt smart. If you drive around glassing meadows waiting for a 200" buck to appear at midday, you're going to be...
Recoil is stiff. Definitely a 10-15 round gun for range sessions. They do come threaded now, though.
Power and portability have no free lunch, but both are welcomed in the elk mountains.
This is good advice.
Every time I carry my Kimber MT 8400 300 WSM I say to myself, “I could sell the rest and just hunt with this gun for everything.”
I have it topped with a 3-9 SWFA and shooting 200 grain bullets. It will handle what you describe just fine and be much nicer to carry around...
Why not just re-zero the rifle yourself with some 165 gr loads, say Nosler Accubond or something similar, and don’t tell her they kick more? She’ll never know, even after the trigger is pulled.
