Son drew National Elk Refuge permit this weekend!

I put my son in for it this year, but he didn’t draw. I know individuals that have had great hunts and not so great times. Having access to good horses would increase your success. My chiropractor nephew drew this year as his first time applying. The only downside is if he kills a monster bull...

Considering a move with family need suggestions

Even because someone is in the military does allow them to attain residency in multiple states at one time. In most cases it’s limited to the assigned active duty base/state, but shortened requirements. It seems widely abused and/or misunderstood

Winter Riding Routine (or not) ?

I’ve found an indoor area last year that we can ride indoors for $25 per horse or $100 per month, but with the mild conditions I’m currently able to ride outside on my property. I’m sure there is a place in the Bitterroot that would have an indoor arena with a nominal price.

    New fillys

Thanks, I did two deer quarters Saturday with no issues. Giving her some feed while I loaded her seemed to really help and hanging up deer hides in their corral

Winter Riding Routine (or not) ?

The only incident I had training my 3 year old horses was riding on packed ice and she reared up and I pulled her back on top of me. It was mostly my inexperience but could have ended way worse

    New fillys

Put some elk quarters on the larger mare for the first time and she slipped the saddle the first time, which was my fault. I re-tacked her and loaded again with no issues and she looked back and smelt the elk and began bucking on a lunge line in a tight circle for a half dozen circles and...

Winter Riding Routine (or not) ?

I ride indoors in the winter, but would like to ride some trails if the conditions are good. Me and my daughter were riding weekly from January until the snow melts.

    Region 7 montana

If you have access to private lands along the powder or tongue river it could offer some decent hunting depending on the surrounding pressure. The state and blm parcels get over ran with hunters and will likely be devoid of elk. Hunting on the forest service for elk is a limited permit. So...

    Stock Rental

I have purchased two foals three years ago for $800 and daughter/myself hand raised them and have been riding them this year since they turned 3 in May. It takes time, feed, etc, but I believe you would end up with a good horse with quality time invested. Both parents had good dispositions...

    Hunting from horse questions

In the winter time with short daylight I feed my horses in the dark and after dark during the short days of December through February and they don’t seem to be effected by lights. I would just try leading and or riding them after dark. I know for myself I have a difficult time going from using a...

    New fillys

I appreciate it MissJordan, you have been a great help. I was thinking about wrapping the quarters in clean game bags and put them in contractors garbage bags for the pack out only which should take about an hour or two leading her out and take the quarters out of the plastic bags once the pack...

    New fillys

Been riding both in an arena and on trails, she seems to get bored in arena, but picks up her step on the trail. I had to take a five week break from riding in June to early July due to working out of state and she didn’t really regress. Planning for a overnight trip from the trailhead on the...

    Livingston Montana Emergency

Same with pipeliners. I probably deserve a 100 dwi, so thankful I didn’t hurt/kill anyone. Most of the lineman/ground men I have worked around it’s a normal week to be bailing somebody out of jail. Good on your Dad! It’s not the end of the world.

Montana Elk Hunting - Advice for a new Hunter

I would either recommend using an outfitter and hunt private land in Region 3,4, or 5 or consider hunting a cow. I was in your shoes about 22 years ago as a nonresident hunter and I contacted biologist and read maps and looked at harvest statistics. I’ve been a resident for 10 years and was a...
