It sure sounds like you clipped the diaphragm then for sure. I wouldnt be shocked if the guts came up into the chest cavity as those lungs deflated and created a situation where the elk didnt die from blood loss as much as a tension pneumothorax…his lungs collapsed and he couldn’t breath due to...
Thats what i was thinking was the entry in my question above. It is crazy there wasn’t a blood soak from when he lied down and died. Esp since that was the down side, you wouod think some blood would have oozed out. So strange.
Based on entry, guessing you hit high and back lungs, probably...
Is there any indication where the shot went in? Is it that spot in chest or was it tough to tell? I dont see anything in that pic which is an obvious entry and the lack of blood staining is bizarre.
Gotcha. I thought so, but wasnt sure if there was some other circumstance you hadnt mentioned.
Again, glad you found him. I would have worked hard to roll that guy over and see where the shot went just for my edification.
I had a similar experience in big bend national park with a school trip. My daughter and two others were in my alaksan guide tent and every night there are strong wonds that rip thru the valley. One night we had extremely strong winds, verified at 70mph and the girls tents were first to be hit...
I love my alaskan guide tent, but i al
Sure i would love the SG one too. The SG gear i have is top notch.
I dont think you go wrong with either, but price is significantly different and you can buy a few extra poles for that cost savings
I would say there is some good wisdom in this thread. 66yards uphill is a shot that will end up with a downward pointing broadhead and could very easily hit low and give good bright red blood that drips but then stops. Could easily have hit one lung low and not both. I can see many possibles...
Would be helpful for people to put their intended use in their posts too. Rifle hunting vs bow is a different animal, and different jackets.
I’ll Say for bow my go to is sitka stratus early and mid season and fanatic later season.
For rifle, its just whatever is appropriate for the weather.
I have worn both in southern OK and i agree the fanatic is warmer than stratus with puffy/insulated mid layer.
Honestly when temps are 65 down to about 40, the stratus with or without a solid mid-layer is the bomb.
When it gets below 35, i will always don the fanatic and the closer it is to...
The sitka heavyweight is similar minus the face mask.
The stone glacier helio is also similar but without facemask or camo.
I am sure kuiu has something similar but without the face mask.
I would just cut the mitt fabric off if you dont like it. I found it helpful to keep the chill off in...
Agree with the above, tent person ratings are based on sleeping only with no room for anything else. So 2p tent is really one person plus gear; 3p is really a 1.5person with gear, and a 4p tent is where you get into a true 2 person with gear.
Take the bigger tent and dont worry about the...
Kuiu has the OG zip off bottoms but now there are also offerings from sitka and stone glacier. I have the 97s from kuiu and have used them but i do find myself using the helio bottoms (non-zippered original) from SG when it gets cold, and if SG had the helio zip offs when i was looking, i most...
The equinox guard from sitka is essentially a pretreated light weight core hoody woth a fee extra features. It does fit a little more loose than my typical ltwt hoody but not significantly so.
Its an option
