He caught movement, scent or just knew something wasnt right, so he was trying to get “whatever” (meaning you) to show itself or make itself known.
common deer behavior, he was just carrying on a little linger than you thought he should.
Most likely what happened is you hit a rib on the entrance and that deflected your arrow forward and didn't double lung.
I agree you should have double lunged with the shot posted, but we can not assume a perfectly straight path thru the animal. I also agree shooting back a little farther is...
A high chest wound that catches very few vessels and seals on both sides with fat or hide or whatever, is likely a surviveable hit. There has to be a lot of luck to prevent a sucking chest wound, and there has to be a lot of luck for the vessels to not bleed too much and cause a hemothorax...
OK, so Texas rifle opening weekend is over, so time for an update.
Story is for anyone who wants to read a long story....for those who don't scroll to the bottom and see the score.
We saw this deer the first weekend of archery season in OK, I was up there for the weekend and it was hot, OSU...
I had to estimste the live weight, because i was time crunched and couldnt get him on my regular scale method, i had to weigh him off my kawasaki mule, and his head never left the ground. With head still on ground the scale showed 185, so I estimate between 200-205#
Another day…texas opener for rifle is this weekend, so i will post tomorrow after legal hunting time.
I will say there are some close answers and a lot are underestimating
I am the same way with bucks, score doesn’t matter much but it is a toolI use to help
Gauge management, among many other things (doe weight being one big part).
I look at a deer and if he looks the part he gets shot. If he doesnt get my
Blood pumping, he gets a pass. This guy we had some pics...
This is posted in the Texas hunting ForuM in time for the rifle season opener, but i took him during archery season in Carter County OK.
Looking for a gross score estimate only, and i have a toe breaker if a couple get close enough…
This is the primary focus of mine. Most of the cold days I hunt are dead quiet type super still mornings where I can hear a pin drop before the world wakes up. If I am in a tree stand and make little bits f noise from shifting or just moving my foot a little, it can spook deer that are staging...
Sorry, I do not believe mine do. But I could be wrong here.
Either way, a good warm weather, quiet pant with built in (included) but removable knee pads.
I have worn the stratus bibs with two base layers and a kuiu superdown pro pant under, and been OK in upper single digit mornings, but the temps were not that low for long, as it warmed up into the 20's pretty quickly once sun was up. I will say, on cold days like those, my feet cool way faster...
The Sitka Intercept pants are good in heat and come with the knee pads. A little heavier material than the Apex pants, but still very breathable and have hip zippers to vent as well. Only thing real drawback is they only have a regular pocket design, no cargo pockets or thigh pockets
