Day 3
Hiking in the darkness again. We found two decomposed whitetail sheds and my friend literally stepped on a big elk shed. Seems like we’re finding the wintering grounds… We got to our planned listening and glassing point ahead of schedule, so we sat down. As we dried our sweat, we got cold...
Gonna keep posting these until someone tells me to stop. I'm building up quite a file now that I plan to give the kids one day. Probably not until they're at least out of high school so they don't know all the mistakes dear old dad has made over the years.
2024
Big time tag this year. I drew a...
I agree with the sentiment above. Organize into categories that make sense to you so you're not yard sailing the truck all the time. I did an archery whitetail hunt and rifle mule deer hunt last year and separated based on treestand vs spot and stalk. I'm guessing those are all elk hunts though...
I do gutless then flop the guts out to get the tendies. Like Svivian mentioned breaking a rib get you a heart hole.
I’m not a liver guy but would probably just cut into the diaphragm after the gut flop if I was.
I’d recommend the marsupial magnetic if you're ok with magnets. It's hands down the best of what I’ve tried (I’ve tried a lot).
I’m an iPhone guy and have had problems with OnX with an iPhone 13. Should be up for a new phone at work next year so I’ll see if the newer ones are better. Not sure...
Whelp. Tried the new SG and Marsupial no mag. Been unimpressed with both so back to the drawing board.
SG seemed like it would be a bit on the loud side (archery use) and the real killer for me was fitment for my specific binos (zeiss 10x42 SFs). They are on the taller side and didn't feel...
Today's the day (week of June 17th). Until I find the next set of goal posts.
Tinfoil Alert: They may opt to seam seal everyone's tent to "add up to 5 days".
Different farm, same pig. The west needs animals and the east needs access. R3 isn't helping with either. With the rise of leasing you might see 1 hunter per 100 acre only on private and 50 hunters per 100 acre on public. I suspect you know where the deer are destroying their habitat in that...
This ^^^.
Along the same lines, look at your unit and hunt plan to see what your glassing opportunities are. If you don’t expect to be glassing over a mile or plan on timber sneaking I’d skip the spotter. 2-4lbs of spotter will end up in the truck for the week after one day or even one long...
"just go hunting" is probably the best advice. Other than that I'd start at a the end of a successful hunt and work backwards and make sure you've got everything you need covered. you'll figure out what you'd want to get nicer versions of as you go.
Cooler for meat
pack to carry meat (looks...
I ordered one on 5/21 and still haven’t received a shipping notice (or tent). Kinda frustrating they make you play “drop” game and then you’re on the back order list.
It looks to be the shelter I’ve been looking for (enclosed DST with half nest, easy pitch, single trekking pole or stick). I...
I think the magnet thing is more of an issue back east. Tough to terrain associate when all you see is trees. I like a pin on ball compass on mine which is a non-starter with any magnets. Even if I moved away from that I still had issues with onx and my iPhone 12. (Holding my phone away from my...
I guess that was a bit of a low blow. Nothing is as bad as that butthole tool. I've just found that gut hooks seem to get in the way for a lot of knife tasks and that I can do the job of a gut hook 90% as good using a canadian belt style blade or with a blade between two fingers (more belly...
I hunt MI around home, UP deer camp, and out west. If temperatures are good for hanging we'll gut and hang, but generally quarter into a 150qt coleman x-treme. I broke your list into two categories, field and home.
Field
1) Sharp knife. (I could live with just a havalon, but am messing around...
