Not very far distances for that game. All the scopes you listed have top mags of 20x to 24x. That's fine for the range as a spotting scope, but you won't need or use that power when hunting.
I use the Leupold VX-6HD 3-18x44. I used to have a larger scope (4-24x52). Too big.
The VX-5HD...
Rifles are tools. They deliver bullets.
Bullets: I agree with the folks who recommend the 7mm Rem Mag. There are other cartridges that are just fine also. 7 of 8 guys in my elk camp are 7 Rem Mag guys (including me) and we have never had any issues with appropriate kill power. Do other...
We might need a little more info. Are you planning on hunting whitetails from a stand, or backpacking into the wilderness for a week with this rifle? I would recommend two different rifles (prob same caliber) for these two different hunts.
Thanks. Only shot a smokepole once. I was a little kid (12) as an extra in the Dawn Wells film "Winterhawk." Justius McQueen and the guys were plinking at a piece of wood in a pond, and between video shoots he asked me if I'd like to take a poke. I did and it was fun. They all laughed with...
My secret to successful elk hunting is perserverance. You have to stay out - cold, wet, freezing, dark. You need to be there when the elk come through. If your buddy is willing to do that just great. If he's willing to remain back at camp and cook and have the fire going when you get back...
My only issue with a suppressed normal length barrel is when it is slung over my shoulder and I go under a tree. I just have to remember to tip the rifle aft slightly. Other than that the benefit of the suppressor outweighs any of the downsides (even the weight and forward imbalance).
It will be interesting to see. The early season is only 15K tags, the late is unlimited for Any Elk. I wonder how many will do early vs. late. Great that they have unlimited youth tags. Take a kid hunting.
Why would you chop down a barrel to add a suppressor? Perhaps I'm missing something.
I had a Remington 700 barrel threaded by a gunsmith so it could accept a suppressor. He didn't chop the barrel, he threaded it. I lost no speed or accuracy.
I bought my daughter a 7mm-08. It's a great, low kicking, big game gun. It is a Browning A-Bolt II, left hand, youth model with a shorter stock. I load the same Berger 180's that I use in my 7mm Rem Mag and she is deadly with it.
Very manageble kick.
Many things here in Utah are messed up with the draws and OTC tags. But one of the things I like is that a cow elk is not related to a bull elk. Antlerless in Utah is treated as unrelated to Antlered. Separate draws and seasons.
I hope you're successful with a good area with that many...
A couple of quotes from over the years:
"There are old pilots, and there are bold pilots. There are no old, bold pilots."
and, from an old major to me as a new F-16 student year ago, after a night landing gear emergency:
"Jack, right now you have a bag of luck. Your experience bag is empty...
