She's taken elk, antelope and deer with that rifle. I load the same bullet that I use with my 7mm Rem Mag, the Berger 180 VLD.

Elk hunting options with 11 yr old son?

Go for a good cow elk hunt. Many more shot opportunities. The joy of hunting early on. I think the need for scoring the size of racks should be deemphasized when starting out. It will come later.

    Youth Rifle Options

I bought my daughter a 7mm-08. It's a great, low kicking, big game gun. It is a Browning A-Bolt II, left hand, youth model with a shorter stock. I load the same Berger 180's that I use in my 7mm Rem Mag and she is deadly with it. Very manageble kick.

Nice cat. I had one walk right by my boots when I was leaning back glassing while elk hunting one day.

Consider also if you will take anti-malarial medication. Some recommend it. There are several kinds, and they can have interesting side effects. I initially started some but then stopped taking it.

    Conservation Organization

It's great that there are so many organizations that work to provide habitat and hunting opportunities. There's one for you, what ever your passion. But all that habitat and reintroduced species is for naught if we can't own a gun or can't hunt. From that perspective, in addition to other...

Been there twice - once for rifle and once for archery. Limpopa and Natal. My hunts were in June. Chilly most mornings. Many good points above. 1. Everything has thorns. Don't touch. 2. Learn to use shooting sticks when shooting offhand. You need occasionally to shoot over those thorny...

Echo the cold and the floods. I lived in Fargo for 10 years and still have a place east of Crookston. Many folks who didn't grow up in the Northland only last a winter or two before they bail for warmer climes. I lived on the Red and was there during the flood of '97, when the river went to...

Through Our Eyes - A wildlife documentary through the eyes of a hunter

Excellent video. Great use of different angles of shots, from the drone, the ground level ptarmigan, and the wide sweeps of the valleys. Also very good sound to accompany and set the mood on the different scenes. Congrats.

Another issue I've had is putting the rifle in a scabbard. Kind of tough when it is so long.

Help a rookie decide - Archery or 4th rifle

    1. See if you can get out for a weekend some time prior to the hunt just to get the lay of the land. 2. See if there is anyone on these forums who lives near Craig or Steamboat that could give you some pointers. Going solo on your first elk hunt is often a recipie for reduced success. When I...
