    When to scout for waterfowl?

I see zero issue hunting an evening in what you think is a good spot and adjusting the following morning based on that. A move of only a few hundred yards can make a huge difference. Scouting fields on the prairies is different than public lakes/marshes in that you almost have to hunt to scout...

Close to Giving Up on Rifles

Depending on spring wear and extractor tolerances 85’s can eject vertically. They had some geometry issues largely driven by the 3 lug bolt they used.

Close to Giving Up on Rifles

You turn the windage turret to the elevation position to get the new windage turret on the non ejection side so the empty might clear because Sako 85’s eject at the 1 o clock position.

Close to Giving Up on Rifles

Marlin lever guns are known to be jam nightmares even with improved lifters and manufacturing. Kimber Roulette is a well known thing, but 3 keep the best one. Sako 85’s have well known ejection issues since fixed with dual ejectors on the 90’s I have not seen a lot of Xbolt issues but Browning...

Short range optic for heavy woods whitetail

No I’ve spent a ton of time messing with all sorts of apertures and front sight combo’s. I also regularly shoot out to 300-400 yards on well lit ranges with iron sights. Once you start dealing with low light or even scattered light you have to start using larger apertures and more visible...

Short range optic for heavy woods whitetail

Because your brain has to align an extra focal plane and their low light performance is either poor or you go to fiber optic sites that are super fragile. Shooting in heavy covet with irons has never worked well for me. A scope cuts through the brush visually just like how binoculars do. I’d...

Help me understand the reasoning of modern optics

Leupold sued Nightforce over side locking turrets. The lawyers ruined it for the engineers and consumers. Case Documents https://casetext.com/case/leupold-stevens-inc-v-lightforce-usa-inc-4 Leupold Patent expires 2033 https://patents.google.com/patent/US9188408B2/en?oq=9188408 Leupold Patent...

Help me understand the reasoning of modern optics

Spotting your shots when hunting solo is super critical so you know what happened and know how to react. Correcting follow up shots is part of this. This also comes down to recoil management, shooting manageable sized cartridges and backing off the scope power so your field of view is bigger...

Help me understand the reasoning of modern optics

Elevation marks are still helpful to measure misses. I agree that they are less useful than windage marks but they are present on most all reticles except for the Swarovski 4W off the top of my head. You will find everyone has a maximum power cutoff for FFP being required but I’ve heard...

Help me understand the reasoning of modern optics

Dial elevation and hold windage is the most common shooting theory with modern optics. That is what drives the value of FFP with exposed elevation. The value of locking turrets is overstated but the biggest problem is that Leupold has intellectual property that limits its proliferation in the...

    Maven’s illumination sucks?

I think the illumination on mine is fairly good, certainly adequate. It’s enough to provide a focal point for your eye. If you are getting a bunch of bloom and bleed on illumination you need to turn it down.

Crack in Carbon Fiber Stock (Pure Precision Altitude)

It looks like the recoil lug moving caused the crack. That’s a fairly critical area and I’d contact the manufacturer.

Short range optic for heavy woods whitetail

I use a Vortex Razor 1.5-8x32 for this case. It’s now discontinued but it’s a great package if you can deal with it not being bulletproof.

    Anyone use 4-24 VX6 for long-range hunting?

There is not much getting around the fact that most longer range hunting scopes will weigh 24-28 oz with only a few in the 20-21 oz range. You really should at least look at other brands besides Leupold. Leupold leans really hard on glass quality and low weight at the cost of durability...

How do you organize your application strategy

I have a running spreadsheet of units/states/tags I want to hunt or have good information on. The longer I’ve applied the more it’s been going back to units myself or friends have some experience in or even the adjacent unit that looks intriguing after time on the ground as less purely...

    2025 NRL Hunter

Is there any downside to shooting your first match as a team versus individual? Or is it better to shoot individually and ask to squad up together? I have a partner who is also interested, we both have some competitive shooting experience with PRS and USPSA and we have hunted and traveled lots...

Buy once cry once shotgun for water fowl

It’s heavily Beretta A400’s and Benelli SBE’s amongst the serious waterfowl hunters know and everything thing else is a distant 3rd. I have both Beretta and Benelli semi autos and it’s a toss up. Beretta’s are heavier and recoil less. Benelli’s are lighter and have fewer moving parts...

    Polishing Action Inside and out?

I did the at home duracote route with a 700 receiver with OK results. It held up fairly well except for on the bolt where it wore off all the contact surfaces after 1,000 rounds or so. At least it didn’t rust but it was a half measure. With rattle can paint you can always touch up the action...

Youth shotgun for 7 yr old

For what’s worth the SBE3 28 gauge kicks lighter than my gas operated Beretta AL390 20 gauge I have while still being 1 pound lighter. It also has all the comfortech accessories that help mitigate some recoil. There is always the Beretta A400 28 gauge for lighter recoil but they come with the...

SWFA website updated; More to come in 2024

As a project manager during COVID shortages we started describing estimated delivery dates as “the most recent lie.” There is some honesty in silence or saying we don’t know at times. Everything I’ve seen from the outside of SWFA’s HD scope delays it looks like a good old fashioned commercial...
