Put in for the draw hunts in NM. You could draw it on the first try, you never know. An Armendaris tag is probably cheaper than TX. NM has the Stallion range, Rhodes Canyon, and the McGregor. Off range is probably easier to draw during the hotter months but you need to watch out for...
I live in NW NM so obvious that I’m a SW CO fan as well. The drive from Durango-Silverton-Ouray-Ridgeway-Telluride-Dolores-Mancos-Durango is incredible with great places to eat and stay the whole way. I like to reverse the drive and start in Mancos. Ride the gondola in Telluride, it’s free! Hot...
I slapped a bull in the forehead once unloading it. The end result was a fractured elbow and 5 staples in my head. Bull died the next day and in the cooler he went for a few weeks.
I went to Taxidermy school. The one I went to is probably closed now and I wouldn’t recommend him anyhow. He was more concerned with how many students he could squeeze in than actually teaching. There are some good ones though. One in Montana, a good one in Idaho but I can’t remember his name...
Hide off. I use the elk skin to lay a quarter on then place into a contractor bag. Carry it over my shoulder to tie up on the game pole. Contractor bag comes off then back for the next quarter. When it’s all hung up then I put on game bags. Most of the time I will use the same contractor bag to...
Have a fuel leak in one the lines coming from the fuel pump. Lifted the bed up and confirmed where it is. Borrowed my BIL’s truck over Labor Day and killed my elk on the first morning. Now I just have to find the time to replace the line.
During a late season rifle elk hunt in Utah I rolled my...
Packed out my elk from this past Sunday. No issues whatsoever with my K4. Loads were heavy but I had no sagging at all, no pinch on my shoulders, hip belt stayed in place on my hips. Best pack I’ve ever had by far.
I would pick the one with the most fresh sign and the one that has most cover close to it. Elk do water at more open tanks but usually more so during the night or close to it. Ones with more trees close by and cover are visited more often during the day. At least in my experience.
I’ve had Kifaru packs as well. They did the job but I couldn’t get them to quite fit me. I now have the EXO k4 and so far it has been way better for me. One huge difference has been the hip belt. I also like the weight and how small it compresses down to day pack mode. I’m also 5’8” and have...
Oryx over elk. Oryx is nothing like pork and elk isn’t really like beef at all. Big differences. The only similarities oryx and pork might have is the tendency to be over cooked. Elk and beef might have the same texture but the flavor is way different.
There are a lot of different cuts to do on an elk. What it comes down to is what your family eats and likes. I’m actually not very fond of most of the steak cuts except backstrap, tenderloin, and sirloin. Never been big on elk roasts. If I do cook one it’s usually shredded then bbq sauce added...
All good suggestions for NM. If you go to northern NM you will get some serious weather that time of year. If you are north then go fish the quality waters of the San Juan river. Weather isn’t usually too bad. If it snows it will be gone pretty quickly. Enjoy NM’s unique food. It’s the best!
Don’t know yet. My K4 5000 will arrive on my doorstep Tuesday. I’m sure one side will hold
My giant Nalgene bottle attached to my hardside hydration set up. Maybe a jacket or more water on the other side. I like to take lots of water with me during the day.
The comfort series is built on a wider last so that’s surprising to hear they are a little narrow. I have an uninsulated pair that I don’t wear because they are too wide causing my forefoot to slide more giving me blisters. I had to have my wife drive two hours and myself the other two to meet...
I have about 6 pairs of DT socks for everyday wear. For me, they are hard to get on. I switched to Grip6 and haven’t looked back. DT are great socks. I just have a hard time getting them because they seem so tight. I mostly use a midweight crew.
This is the way I take care of the meat as well. I did skin one from the back down to the belly once to see what all the fuss was about. Never again! Always from the belly side down to the backbone and then use the inside of the hide as your tarp. I also tie on a piece of paracord on the quarter...
