I really hesitated to post my reply since, I really don't like it when others jump in with a dozen different suggestions after an OP has made a decision on gear. That said, I will make my apologies now to the OP. I too looked hard at the same Arcteryc jacket and just couldn't pull the trigger...
For the areas I hunt (CO, OK, and TX), my Longhunter G2 foliage works best for me. I do prefer camo but, even then, I want it to blend well with the foliage color.
I now have just over 50 miles on mine and I can't say that they are fully broken in, but are very close. Although my Mountain Extremes were comfortable out of the box, I did put just over 35 hiking miles on mine and thought they were ready to go. But, after a backpack elk hunt in CO this past...
I have BD Trail Shock Flicklocks and I've been very happy with them. The handle design is comfortable and functional (for ascending and descending) and the pole system is strong and the Flicklocks lock in nicely. I looked at a couple of different carbon fiber poles and they are definitely...
Smartwool socks work best for me and seem to peal (ball-up) less and show less wear especially in the heel area. I've not tried Darn Tough but I have a half of dozen other brands.
I have used an Integral Designs Sildome tarp tent for a couple of years now. It has been on one elk hunt in CO, 3 deer hunts, and on early fall mountain camping trip to try it out. The tarp has performed well and I've not been too worried about unwanted visitors as I generally use it with a...
Like Lawnboi, I use a waterproof stuff sack and paracord. I'll add that I then hang the stuff sack from a small tree limb (up 12 feet or so) and a few yards from the nearest tent. Also, I try and keep as much of the food as possible in Zip-lock bags.
I use unscented Arm & Hammer. If I'm out in the field for more than a couple of days, I always take a small supply of unscented baby wipes which seems to make the deodorant last longer.
Last year, it took us about 5 hours to make it from trailhead to camp which was about 3 miles. Our hunting party carried backpacks weighing from 60 to 70+ pounds and began the hike at 8,600 ft, climbing to around 10,000 ft where we pitched camp. We did make a couple of stops looking for...
Although I'd love to have the room of a tipi type structure, my Integral Designs Sildome tarp tent and ID Bugaboo Bivy sack have more than met my needs for a couple of years. That said, a tipi tent with a wood stove would be nice on really cold nights, especially when you need to dry your...
Smartwool merino wool base layers have worked great for me and I see no reason to change. It seems that there are a number of shops on the web where you can find them on sale.
I have owned a Dodge Cummins (one of my favorite trucks), a GMC Sierra and a couple of Toyota's (Tundra and FJ Curser). My 2002 Tundra has made 3 hunting trips to S. Dakota, a couple of trips to CO and too many trips to count throughout Oklahoma and TX and has been an excellent truck. If and...
My favorite hunting scope is the Leupold VX-II in a 2-7X33 with a LRD reticle. Good quality glass for a scope in its price range. I have one on a 358 Win and on a 9.3x62 and a similar Redfield 2-7x33 on a 30-30. I will soon replace an older Bushnell 3-9X 40 scope on my 25-06 with the Leupold...
I live in OK, a state with virtually no elk in the wild and the only means to hunt them is a very limited draw for a hunt in a game reserve in the SW part of the state. Folks wait years to get drawn and I have long since give up even trying. As a result, the closest states for elk hunting are...
For me, clothing is a given. If you are not prepared for what mother nature sends your way, you should probably find another hobby. For me, the most important items to not "cheap out on" is:
Boots - (hard to hunt, especially in the mountains) without the support, comfort and warmth of a good...
I put just over 30 miles on my Kenetreks to break them in for a CO elk hunt earlier this year. During the break-in period, they were comfortable and I never had a blister or even a hot spot on my heels. It was a different story after a couple of days of climbing in the mountains. I did get a...
