Thanks for the clarification and again thanks for posting this. I just got the canner and am excited to put it to use! And I'll see what I can do about getting Phil and Jase back up there haha ;-)
I just canned up my first batch of deer meat and have a bunch of frozen duck meat that I'd love to try. I'm going to do this!! How much sauce did you put in the cans? Sounds like you basically you had the meat up to 1" of headspace and had sauce filling the voids and covering the meat. There...
My first foray on a high country backpack hunt I had my sleep system around 2lbs. I went with equipment that was as light as possible. I had a Western Mountaineering Highlite (1lb) and a Exped Synmat UL7 pad (1lb). The weight was fantastic...unfortunatly I slept like s*#t!!! I got somewhat...
+1 on the Attacks. Should have looked into whether they had solid colors available (which is why I didn't mention them in my first post). I alternate between the Attacks and the Kanabs. Both great pants. The Attacks are more similar to the Ascents, and, in fact, I think area bit more durable...
I think the Kanab would be great. I own a pair of Ascents and Kanabs and for early season hunting the Ascents always get left home now in favor of the Kanabs. I find the Kanabs to be more comfortable than the Ascents personally.
The Traverse is an awesome hunting layer during the early season. It too is my favorite Sitka piece. Couple it with a Core long sleeve and a puffy and you are good for most anything the high country will throw at you temperature wise in the early season.
There's great money saving tips here, but if you really want to afford all the gear you want I couldn't agree more with this comment. I have an engineering degree and an MBA. Not trying to sound like a pompous a$$hole (too late, right!?), but education and a great job is the easiest path to...
I have a Swarovski spotter and binoculars with Swarovision. The short answer is yes, they are better glass. The real question is whether that quality is worth the money. I've looked through less expensive glass and at times wondered if my Swaros were worth the money. Against certain glass and...
On this site you get a lot of Kifaru support. But there's other great pack companies too. Your question is a hard one to answer without more details. Are you backpack hunting or hunting from a basecamp? How many days of supplies do you need to haul in your pack? What other gear do you...
What the heck is point banking? Been applying in Colorado for a few years now (and all over the west for that matter) and I've never heard of point banking.
Because there seems to be some interest and a few threads going that I didn't want to hijack (and because I just bought my first pressure canner and am ready to can my first batch of meat!), I wondered if anyone was willing to share any recipes or meals they like to eat with their pressure...
They're definitely a must have. Used one to fix a broken rifle sling on my last hunt (the chicago screw backed out and I was able to put the sling back together with a zip tie through the hole where the screw was supposed to be). Maybe it's obvious to everyone, but if you find one is too small...
I just wanted to chime in and say I completely agree with this thread. There are definitely some armchair quarterback that seem like they know what's best in every situation without ever being in those situations. I know it's been reiterated a ton of times, but the point is that you should...
I'd echo a lot of the comments on here. I've hunted in Idaho, New Mexico, and Colorado. Not sure what criteria you are looking for when referring to Wilderness experience, but to me everyone of those states and every one of those hunts offered a Wilderness adventure. If you are not looking...
Looking forward to the article! Just bought a pressure cooker/canner based on some other posts I read about canned meat. Sounds like it's a fantastic way to handle some tougher cuts of meat. Sounds like the meat more or less falls apart and will be great to use in stews, tacos, etc...looking...
I've been following the thread and thought I'd weigh in as a fellow flatlander who has gone through most of the frustrations and trials that you are now experiencing. First and foremost, hunting elk in the mountains is, IMO, a mental game. I can sense the frustration and disappointment and I...
