    Caliber for Daughter??

One other thing I would add is go find someplace for her to shoot in the woods. Get away from the range and the bench. Shoot off sticks or a pack in the open. I think a lot of recoil sensitivity is as much from the noise as it is from the push. The roof and all the other yahoos at the range...

    Caliber for Daughter??

I started my son on a 6.5CM. It took him until this year (13 years old) to be comfortable with the recoil. I loaded reduced loads for him but in the end it was more about being willing to accept how recoil felt than the amount of recoil. He was a pretty small kid when he started and even the...

    Bow toughness/reliability

From personal experience I don't think Bowtech bows are terribly durable. The cams on mine are particularly fragile (RevoltX).

Do you gut birds in the field?

I pull the guts where I shoot them. I don't finish cleaning/plucking them at the truck unless it's a trip and I'm in a hotel. Then I'll finish the cleaning at the truck but I step into the field a bit so there aren't feathers where folks park.

    Best Value for Scope <$300?

I'm pretty happy with my Burris fullfield. I know lots of folks criticize them but it seems like a simple, effective, bright scope to me. Nothing fancy.

Training a bird dog at 5?

Start her gun training at home. Begin making louder and louder noises every time you feed her or give treats. Things like cupboard doors, stomping your feet while you walk her to the food bowl. Stuff like that. After she's used to that move on to louder stuff. When my dog was a pup I cut the...

Any of their bows with the switchweight modules. They've been using them since at least 2019.

What binoculars would suit me best?

All depends on your hands and your eyes. My son has shaky hands and an 8x is his sweet spot. I carry 12x and love them because my eyes aren't that great and they really help me see the landscape better. Go to a store and try 8's and 10's and see if you like hand holding 10's.

Are High Power Bino's (15s, 18s) Worth It?

No. I just use my 12x50s and a tripod. I don't care about antlers though.....if I was hunting sheep or goats I'd probably want a spotter

    New vs old mathews

I have a Triax and a V3. The Triax is my backup bow. I don't feel a ton of difference between the two but the V3 does seem a bit better in the draw cycle. I'm shooting a 60#/27" module. If I was looking for a used bow and there was a Triax and a V3 to choose from I'd choose the V3 unless the...

Does anyone recommend a beginners reloading kit?

Agreed. I started reloading two years ago and am glad I did not get a kit. Happier to get each piece as I need it and be able to choose what works for me regardless of brand.

    Coolers?

I have two 120 quart Coleman Extreme 5 Marine coolers. I can fit two cut, wrapped and frozen mule deer in one with ice packs in a layer on the bottom. My only gripe about them is the lid design allows water to wick inside if they get rained/snowed on. A tarp solves that problem. I bought...

Are High Power Bino's (15s, 18s) Worth It?

I switched to 12x50's this fall. After a couple of hunts I don't see myself going back!

    Maven

I demoed a pair of the 15's against the B6 12x50's. I ended up keeping the 12x50's simply due to size and ergonomics. I found the difference between the two pretty small and the 12's are just fine for me to hand hold as well as use on a tripod. The 15's were too front heavy for me and I found...

How many binoculars do you own/use?

8x42 Nikon Action - truck binos 8x42 Nikon Monarch 5 - backup or for when I want something light weight. My 13 year old son will be using them this fall. 12x50 Maven B.6 - main optics that stay on my chest or on the tripod.

    Kelvin Lite down jacket

I have one I bought a month ago. It's cut nicely for an every day jacket and the hood works well. Only gripe is the insulation thins out on the lower back. For me that means that there is less insulation for a hand span above my belt so the small of my back gets cold when the temps drop. I...
