Ahead of the trip at home, for each day I put 2 of the flavoured oatmeal packs in a ziplock bag and I also toss in a scoop of vanilla protein powder. The ziplock bag serves as the bowl. Boil up some water and you are good to go.
I'm not sure about the socks you were wearing but some advice I've been given is that for boots with a synthetic liner (ie goretex) your socks should be less than 50% wool content for the boots to breathe properly. Also with those temperatures and the insulated boots changing to dry socks during...
A vote here for X-Bionic. It is pretty cool stuff. I've worn UA for years, but this X-Bionic is quite the technical gear. In addition to wicking sweat it actually helps to maintain a constant body temp - not too hot or cold and it doesn't stink either.

X-Bionic base layer clothing
Wondering if anyone else has had a chance to check out X-Bionic base layer clothing? I've always used some form of a wicking base layer in the past while hiking/hunting and had always been pretty happy with it. Recently I've tried this stuff out and it is truly...
For breakfast I take two packages of instant oatmeal and empty them into ziplock bags at home and add a scoop of protein powder. Come breakfast time you only have to heat some water then pour it into the ziplock bag and eat your oatmeal right out of the bag. Lunch/snacks usually consist of a...
As the others have pointed out there are a number of good reasons to have a pair of trekking poles. My first pair were twist lock Komperdell and my current pair are flip lock Black Diamonds. Well worth the money IMO. You don't need to buy the top of the line ones, but I certainly wouldn't buy...
Plenty of great advice. I found myself in similar shoes in 2009 - after coming to the realization of how out of shape I was on a hunt in the mountains in 2007. I'm about the same height as you, and was about the same weight when I started. I've managed to drop and keep off 15 pounds, although my...
I'm currently using a Mystery Ranch Behemoth (6500). My prior pack was a MR Cerberus. I've still got some fine tuning to do on my Behemoth pack, but all in all I've been happy with them both.
For anyone using a Slik have you any idea where to find replacement/spare base plates for a Slik Sprint Pro II/SBH-100DQ head? I have tried numerous places with zero luck.
Thanks.
Crummy day today with a mix of rain/snow/sleet. Figured no better chance to take some time and go hike the hills and test out some gear. It seems we so seldom get rain that it would be a good chance to try some stuff out. I picked my way through every patch of brush I could find while hiking...
Plenty of sheep hunting fans on here, and more than a few that have commented that a sheep hunt would be a dream hunt for them, so I figured this would be good info to post.
