    OnX/GoHunt maps error?

Be wary of comparing aerial photography to parcel mapping. They both have their inherent set of errors. Remember that all mapping is based on a coordinate system and projection which is based on a model of the earth's curvature. None are perfect. Most parcel mapping coming out of counties is...

1 Piece of Advice to pass onto a New Hunter

And don't stop hunting until the rifle is in it's case! I've stopped hunting on the way back to the truck a few times due to fatigue or lack of motivation only to bust an animal ridiculously close to the truck. I had a pheasant flush at the end of a hedge row mere feet from the truck once. My...

    Your ultimate clothing system

Boots - Meindl Comfort Fit Hunter (7 years)...these are getting pretty long in the tooth. I said it was time to replace them a year or so ago but then my son came of age to big game hunt so the money went to getting him some gear. Socks - whatever merino that's affordable...usually REI. Base...

What’s you’re draw weight vs Age

I'm at 60lbs. I used to pull 70 but changed after talking to a life long bow hunter that has taken game on every continent. He has never shot anything but 60 lbs on anything he's hunted and his shoulders are still working just fine in his 70's. Good enough for him....good enough for me!

    Maven B1.2 vs B.6 / 8X vs 10X

Nothing wrong with getting what you like! I don't think you can just buy one pair of binos and be done forever. Needs change, your eyes change, your likes change.

    How far does scent travel?

I think it depends on the wind speed. I read something a while back about bird dogs not being able to scent much at all when the wind goes over 30 mph or something like that.

    Pack cover or no?

I've abandoned pack covers in favor of silnylon liner bags. Sounds like that's what you're doing with the sea to summit ultrasil bags. No need for a pack cover if that's your set-up

    Favorite Backcountry Gear 2022

Maven B.6 12x50 binos.. Just spectacular Swift Instant Coffee. Still instant but better than any I've tried. Loved that mid-day hot cup of coffee after lunch! VIAM game bags. Used them and washed them twice in the course of a week. Cleaned up super easy and worked great.

    Synthetic / down jacket warmth..

Construction of the jacket seems to be the biggest factor for me. I have a 650 fill Patagonia McMurdo jacket that is really puffy and it's the best down jacket I've ever had. I had a GoLite hooded down jacket for a while that was like 850 or 900 fill with a pertex shell. Should have been the...

    Maven B1.2 vs B.6 / 8X vs 10X

I started out hunting elk in southwest Colorado in 2015 (late to the game!) with a pair of 8x42 Nikon Monarch 5 binos. They did the job but I always felt like I was missing things. I was given the advice to buy a nice pair of 8x42's because it wasn't the magnification that was the problem is...

Aspen Area and Gunnison to Montrose Corridor - likely for wolf release

RMNP is off the list because CPW doesn't have the time/resources to do a federal environmental impact study.

    Backcountry Caches

I've come across a few stashes/caches over the years. Always looked like trash to me. I never disturbed them because I don't want to screw someone over but I can't say I particularly like seeing them around.

    Snow/avalanche shovel

+100 on this. I've seen many a plastic shovel fail. I've been using an aluminum Voile for going on 20+ years and it's done duty from digging vehicles out to hasty pits to a sled for my little kids....when they were that little :)

Aspen Area and Gunnison to Montrose Corridor - likely for wolf release

They are bringing more in because that's what the ballot initiative directs. No choice in the matter. I think CPW is doing a pretty good job considering the difficult position voters put them in. We may not agree with the re-introduction but we'd better engage and give our input while there's...

Thinking about ditching my puffy pants

Nope.....but I don't own any either :) I just carry a warm down jacket compressed down and stuffed in the bottom of my pack. Figure if the going gets rough at least I have an extra warm layer. Been some sub 0 mornings I would have been pretty happy to have puffy pants though!

    Game bag question

I've been using the VIAM bags for a season now. Pretty happy with them. I didn't notice any sticking really. I didn't have the meat hung in the bags more than a half a day before I started butchering though.

Did you miss an animal this year?

I connected on deer this year but I shot at/over/around/behind a box worth of birds in October!

What Temp bag for SW CO archery?

I bring a 15 and a 0 and make the call based on the weather forecast. I use the 15 for the most part but there have been times sleeping in my truck that I ended up breaking out the 0. I tend to hunt the end of archery season and at upper elevations. It's a crap shoot and it depends on how...

    Neck sizing lube.

Yep, lanolin and alcohol. I've not been reloading long but the price and function are hard to beat.
