What should be my next cartridge?

I recently sold a 7mm RM that was my long range hunting rifle to make room and funds for a .243AI for my new long range hunting rifle. I would do it again. (Though I'd strongly consider a 6CM instead if I were doing it over). Do you hand load? I'm liking this .243AI, but a 6CM would...

2024 Cold Bore Challenge Q&A Thread

Two questions... First hundred to post their first shot get in, or first hundred to complete the challenge with both (or all four) shots? Thread opens at 8 to post the video of a shot taken on on the morning of June 1, or challenge opens at 8:00, shot must be taken after that time? Thanks for...

    Scope Recommendation for Kids

I have mixed feelings on this. My 14 year old has an SWFA 6x and it's the right scope for him, but a pre-teen shooting less than 200 yards is to me better served by a Burris Fullfield or Trijicon Credo 3-9 capped duplex scope.

.223 for bear, mountain goat, deer, elk, and moose.

Because (and this is why everyone says to read the thread) it's been demonstrated over and over and over to produce consistently better wound channels than the .223 "hunting bullets"

Hunting scope 500-700 yards FFP under $800

I think an LRHS, SHV 3-10, SWFA 3-9, or Tenmile (borderline) can be bought used for $800± and are great hunting scopes for 600+. I'd take any of these over a Razor LHT, MK5, or a lot of other $1k+ scopes. Zero argument on the practice bit.

Looking for 600 yard deer/elk rifle. Recommendations?

You get the principle, it's very much the same process. How many guys have any business shooting a turkey at distances where a 20 gauge (or even .410) with modern turkey loads won't cut it? A 3½" 12 gauge with steel shot might be equivalent to a .300WM with a mono or hard bonded bullet.

The fixed powers are great, the 6x is a favorite of mine.

Looking for 600 yard deer/elk rifle. Recommendations?

I try to think in terms of "what will give me my preferred wound channel?" And "what is the most efficient way to achieve that?" If I want more tissue destruction than a 3-4" diameter path 16" deep (77TMK), I can get that. A 5+" diameter path 20" deep can be had, but I really don't want that...

Hunting scope 500-700 yards FFP under $800

My understanding is that the internals (optical and mechanical) are the same (which is a very good thing) though glass may have slightly upgraded coatings. It has locking exposed windage rather than capped (a downgrade for my use). I wouldn't hesitate if you prefer new and/or don't want to wait...

Also, be sure to check out the scope eval section if you haven't yet in the long range subforum... https://rokslide.com/forums/forums/rifle-scope-field-evaluations.133/ Go there with an open mind and read the what/why thread that explains the evaluations first. Thread 'Scope Field Eval...

Hunting scope 500-700 yards FFP under $800

You can occasionally find LRHS's in that price range (used). I've been really happy with mine in both the 4.5-18 and the 3-12 (preferred) versions.

Anyone shooting 108 in a 243 win tikka?

    Yes, no issues.

Anyone shooting 108 in a 243 win tikka?

I'd guess you'll end up at that pretty comfortably. I'm at 3050 in a .243AI with 19" barrel. My Tikka factory .243 chamber was throated such that 108 ELDMs were not buried in the case, just grab M+ mags to seat out to the 2.85 (IIRC) that it will support in factory form (or just load at 2.80 and...

Looking for 600 yard deer/elk rifle. Recommendations?

I have a genuine question for you. Do you see this as a position you arrived at logically? Is it based on evidence? If yes, what evidence would be required to change your position (if it's evidence and reason got you here, it must be the case that evidence and reason could move you to a new...

Does the 223/6mm for everything change when hunt cost $$$

Same for 12 gauge slugs. 400 gr prijectile at 1600 (IIRC, it's been more than a decade since I killed something with a slug). Same observed behavior. Not many DRT, lots of 30-100 yard runs.

Does the 223/6mm for everything change when hunt cost $$$

What if you were going on a hunt where you knew there was a chance that space aliens would show up and they had armor that was specifically designed to stop small diameter tipped match bullets, but was very vulnerable to large diameter solids? Would you use the .223 then? Huh? Wouldja?

.223 for bear, mountain goat, deer, elk, and moose.

The only 77TMK mist I have comes from rock chucks. There are lots of good .223 bullets for 200 yard and under shots on deer. There aren't many that are good to 400+ with .223rem MV's. That's the unique thing about this bullet, 400+ yard terminal performance with .223 recoil exists with 77TMK...

Does the 223/6mm for everything change when hunt cost $$$

Yep, I think part of the problem boils down to how poorly we judge our abilities to utilize the full potential capabilities of our tools. I'd guess that most "pretty good" drivers would turn in better lap times in a Porsche Boxster than in a Carrera GT on a road course. But everyone is going...

Looking for 600 yard deer/elk rifle. Recommendations?

A couple years ago I put 4 180 Berger hybrids through the chest of an elk at 400 yards as it stood there wobbling before it tipped over. Probably 15-20 seconds, and 4-5 steps. That can happen with any cartridge, I've seen video of an elk soaking up multiple controlled expansion bullets from...
