No compromise tripod (glassing and shooting) for cheap!

I'm 6'1". Before adding the pan head, it was marginal for standing glassing but fine for standing shooting. With the added height of the pan head the only time I wish for more is when standing on a down slope so tripod is below my feet and I'm trying to look across the valley level or uphill.

No compromise tripod (glassing and shooting) for cheap!

I've done a decent amount of shooting off regular 40-55mm ball heads (as well as a little off compact ~30mm ball heads) of varying quality. I'd put this above all ball heads I've used for shooting (again with the caveat that I have never shot off RRS heads including the Anvil). The large radius...

In need of recommendations for rifles

I'd recommend a T3X (not super lite) in .223 or 6.5CM, and instead of the Vortex get a Trijicon Huron if money is tight or a Credo if there's room in the budget (or try to hold out for a SWFA 6x). This combo (properly assembled) will be a reliable, quality option that will give you tons of...

Recently missed a caribou on a hunt of a lifetime. What caused the miss?

Your shoot-to was 410? That means your LOS distance was around 580 yards if the angle was 32° by my calculations (ballistic, not trigonometric) to get the same elevation correction in my calculator. Trig function puts the LOS at ~485 to get a horizontal distance of 410. That's a pretty big...

    First Western Rifle

Can you expand on this statement? Have you seen 6.5CM's used (correctly) and deliver unsatisfactory results? I'm using 108 ELDM and 77 TMK for deer, elk, and would happily shoot a goat or moose with them as well. They do heaps of damage, reliably penetrate through the vitals, and kill at least...

    Group issues long range

I have a little bit different perspective on this... If a friend were engaged to a girl and he was having trouble keeping her from having psychotic meltdowns when she's hungry, or tired, or stressed out, would you advise him to figure out how to make sure she's always fed, rested, and relaxed...

Youth rifle idea's for western Montana

Out of curiosity why the 6.5 prc? Also how old is your kid? That's way more recoil than I would ever put a pre-teen behind!

    Tikka .243 AI

I did some measuring with mine before sending off for an AI chamber. From the factory, 108 ELDM seated at the lands is 2.830 OAL in mine. 106 TAP is 2.885 OAL. Both these seat the boattail junction below the neck/shoulder by ~0.050, so not terrible. The M+ magazine (6.5 CM) allows a 2.95 OAL...

    Rokstok + Maven RS 1.2 + UM Tikka Rings + S2H U = a revolution in hunting for 2024?

Obviously they were all aware of what a killer a fella is likely to be if he's toting an RSRSRSS. Legal bucks are bound to go nocturnal with that guy roaming the hills.

    Scope clearance question

This probably will be a 5 page thread. Summary will be: Rifle is great. Chambering is not. Gap is fine. Scope is the weak link in the system.

Dumb Q about Scope turrets and BC. Please help!

Can you post a photo of your turret? Are you open to considering replacing your scope? I would be hesitant to try and dial this scope, and if it's one of the way older ones without resettable turrets there's no way I'd recommend it. With that scope, here would be my inclination (and what I...

What caused the Rokslide shift to smallest caliber and cartridges?

Mine too. To try to get this back on track, I have no idea if it's been mentioned at this point, but suppressors were a significant factor in my shift personally. Not that it was objectively true, but my braked 7mmRM shot really mild, so I didn't feel like I was really losing anything by...

What caused the Rokslide shift to smallest caliber and cartridges?

I really mean no offense, but you're not real perceptive if you honestly believe that. Edit: you really are very good at what you do. I click "show ignored content" one time, and I can't not rise to the bait. Truly a master.

    First Rifle Choice

There are a lot (a LOT) of us who have gone from magnums to more moderate cartridges. There's a ton more to it than how much the recoil bothers you. Hit rates, spotting shots, speed of follow up shots all improve substantially as recoil goes down. I grew up on 12 gauge slugs, shot a 7mmRM as...

Idaho's Hunting and Advanced Technology Working Group Coming

Maybe I'm naive, but I don't see any of those being on the table. I think rangefinders are so firmly established as a basic piece of hunting gear, and there's absolutely no practical way to enforce a prohibition on ballistic computers since they live on your phone (plus dope cards are an easy...

Idaho's Hunting and Advanced Technology Working Group Coming

I don't read anything in that press release that says fudd culture to me. The impression I get is that we want to have the conversation about drones, cell capable trail cams, etc before they are so widely in use that people would throw a fit about having them taken away. I think that's a really...

What caliber would you start a hunter with?

I've used AR's for little people in the past, and a bigger issue than single loading vs a few in a mag in my experience is quietly chambering a round. I really think a kid should carry their own rifle, and I'm quite disinclined to have them carry with one in the pipe. When it comes time to...

What caliber would you start a hunter with?

I'd take a .223 with 77TMK's over any .30-30, 7.62x39, 6.8spc, 6.5Grendel option. It'll kill the heck out of anything on the north American continent and is the absolute easy button in terms of rifle setup and ammo selection (though availability can be challenging at times) If one must do...
