Happy to chat. Each state is very different in terms of draw process and what you can expect. Your strategy will depend on what your expectations are and how long you plan to play the game. Are you trying to find more opportunity to just go? Are you only wanting higher profile/OIL type hunts? Do...
Good stuff.
I am using/used the swaro 8x32ta this year. I’m too much of a glass snob I guess..plus I end up doing quite a bit of still hunting/off hand glassing where 8x is preferred. I may have gotten a good sample but have no issues getting solid ranges..farthest I’ve tried was 1400ish. At...
You guys must be a lot tougher than me!
2 3/4 #3s for ducks. Bought by the case because they are a bit harder to find. I shoot 2 3/4 SO much better than 3in shells..almost night and day. The ducks are just as dead and I don’t start getting a headache and flinching half way through the morning...
In the future, probably the most helpful thing you can do is scout before the season. Bounce around covering country using the road system and glassing longer distances until you figure out what kind of country/elevation is holding deer, then hone in or expand from there.
Once hunting season...
For those who have used the reticle: is the 1.0 mil increments a hindrance? I find myself often using/needing the 0.5 increments on my mavens. Often bracketing the vitals between 0.5 and 1.0 mils for instance, when the exact hold is somewhat uncertain but i have a fairly good idea of where it’ll...
500 yards and in, 25 creedmoor no question. Unless you are wanting a very short barrel, it will do everything you need burning less powder with manageable recoil. I have owned 25-06, 25-284, and 25 creedmoor barrels all fast twist for heavies and the 25 creedmoor is the only one left in my safe...
I wouldn’t burn those points next year. Colorado is going back to the “old” season structure for the next 5 year period. For the current and last 4 seasons the age class has suffered due to late season dates.
Personally I’d wait for a couple years of the new season structure and hope things get...
570ish yards, 25 creedmoor with 134gr eldm. Around 2200fps impact velocity. This buck did not want to die and took three bullets through the chest cavity. I believe the final shot was the one that pinned both shoulders and anchored him for good.
Shoulder shot did not exit. No detailed necropsy...
Another one to add with 134 eld.
Mule deer buck impact velocity 2200fps. He did not want to die and took three bullets through the chest/lungs. 2/3 exited, one crushed both shoulders and was caught under the hide on the off side. Great internal damage, slightly larger than golfball sized wound...
If there is significant snow the vast majority of the deer will be quite a bit lower. If there is not snow, there will probably be a few up there but still more will be lower or transitioning. Have hunted SW Montana around those dates and you will want to have multiple places to hunt planned out...
