.223, 6mm, and 6.5 failures on big game

There are shot angles easily handled by a 308 that I would not take with any 22 caliber.

.223, 6mm, and 6.5 failures on big game

So you are not sure where it will land when you pull the trigger?

.223, 6mm, and 6.5 failures on big game

I am going to start with the 88 gr. ELDM factory loads. Probably go to either of the X or M 80 grain bullets when I start loading the ARC.

There you are, if it's not excessive then where is the problem?

.223, 6mm, and 6.5 failures on big game

Neither has excessive recoil. Yes I can fire more consecutive rounds accurately through a 223 than a 308 but that number with a 308 is much larger than virtually any hunting situation would require with the exception of prairie dogs or other colony rodents. I used to shoot my left over 30-06 elk...

.223, 6mm, and 6.5 failures on big game

In hunting situations I can easily shoot a 7-08, 7x57 or 308 as well as I can shoot a 223. I have shot thousands of rounds through rifles chambered for those four cartridges. Recoil to me is cumulative. I can put the first three shots from much heavier recoiling rifles than those listed exactly...

.223, 6mm, and 6.5 failures on big game

I competed in 3 position shooting in both hi power and rimfire for years. When I pull the trigger, whether I see the bullet impact or not is immaterial because I know where it went. I have been shooting the 223 and 308 since 1974 among many other cartridges.

.223, 6mm, and 6.5 failures on big game

Ha ha ha you must be kidding. How does recoil effect your shooting while hunting? With a minor amount of practice and good form it shouldn't even bother you on the bench, Talking 308 Winchester.

What are the actual disadvantages? Say of using a 308 instead of a 223.

    22 ARC

Ordered a light 16 inch 22 ARC barrel from Faxon. A few more parts and will assemble it. Gas gun velocity I hope will match that of a 20 inch 223 with 75-80 grain bullets. Deer, coyotes and feral hogs. Probably won't be finished before deer season ends but coyotes and hogs will still be targets.

What caused the Rokslide shift to smallest caliber and cartridges?

Maybe so but for me anyway heavy loads from a 7MM RM or a 30-06 do not effect my ability to place bullets in the right place.

What caused the Rokslide shift to smallest caliber and cartridges?

So a 250 grain Nosler Partition out of a 35 Whelen has absolutely nothing on a 223 using relatively soft hunting/match style bullets? Personally I feel that for most of us a 7-08 running good bullets weighing 120-140 grains at the same velocities or higher than a 223 can push the 77 gr. TMK is...

    22 ARC versus 223

Well I already have a Grendel and a 6ARC so I have magazines. None are curved and the Elanders hold 17 rounds they do have a slight forward curve. Nothing like an AK47 magazine.

    22 ARC versus 223

I am thinking the 22 ARC would be a good choice if I wanted to shoot the TMK and heavier -X and -M bullets. It seems you need a longer magazine or a faster twist than many 223 rifles have and Factory ammo using good bullets is very available. I thought about getting a 1-7 twist barrel for my...

    6 arc or 6.5 grendel

And that has exactly nothing to do with the OP's question. Nothing.

6ARC and 6.5 Grendel 105 and 123 gr, Hornady BTHP for deer

    That appears adequate.

Match bullets vs early hunting bullets

Well it's true that energy can't tell you what shape or form a wound channel will make but is it possible it could measure wound volume roughly. I mean comparatively a 162 grain bullet of identical construction to a bullet weighing 75 grains impacting at the same velocity would make a larger...

    50-500y 6.5 Black Bear Bullet

Hah! I would happily use a 140 grain Sierra Gameking.

Match bullets vs early hunting bullets

I am old enough to have used some of the early hunting bullets. The bronze points, Winchester had a hollow point that was a flat bronze color and the early Sierra Gamekings. They pretty much did what modern match bullets are doing, get in a bit and come apart. In fact a lot of early hunting...
