Thanks to all of you guys for your input. I’ve wondered this also, if road camping and leaving the ponies home would be more efficient than dealing with the daily chores of the animals..? You hunted 2012 correct? Is the hunting pretty similar now compared to then? We typically cover 5-8...
In 2017 I packed in around 6 miles to set up camp. Lots of hunters, drop camps and locals. They all got there with pack animals. Very disappointed to say the least to find that type of crowd
Read some of the posts above. Coal Crk road is very busy. I used it two years ago and took the last remaining parking spot the night I arrived. Multiple buddy campers hiking in and several horse trailers including mine. It’s a long hike to get to elk, and you can expect to find more hunters...
My brother drew an archery tag for 61 this year as a NR, with 22 points I believe. We have hunted numerous Colorado units but never this one. We will likely be using a horse and mules to assist on this hunt, so that means packing in to set up camp hopefully near elk and away from people. I’m...
If you choose the Kuiu Icon pack I'd get the 6000 bag instead of 3200. The bigger bag will be more versatile for over night hunts but also compresses down to day pack size nicely also. You won't be adding any extra weight really and the big bag isn't bulky when you cinch it down.
Im not saying there isn't a pressure issue. I've hunted several units over the last 15 or so years and do think the pressure is too high for the elk numbers and cost of tags. My point is that the article is trying to act like the only reason for the decline in the region is over hunting, and...
This article was brought up recently in another thread. That article is clearly written from a leftist perspective and is meant to curb public opinion on hunting and its effects on wildlife. Its full of opinions from lefists to make the points they want to. They rule out predators and disease...
PATHETIC! Clear to see this article is coming from a leftist perspective. Hunters, farmers/ranchers, and climate change are all to blame. Not bears, not mountain lions, not the people that make the rules we all have to follow. Why doesn't the state take any blame, they make the season...
If all of this is about opportunity because of elk numbers and calf recruitment, then the discussion should begin with predator control issues. Very few hunters are going to shoot a calf. Bears however make a living on them. This coming from an outfitter that's been in the business for...
Muddydogs, take them boys outdoors. They are still young and can really grow up appreciating the outdoors and wildlife. Do your best to give them positive experiences and try to set them up for success and they will be more likely to enjoy it all. Regardless if they grow up and like to hunt...
You can also plan on putting the mounts in a shop with high ceilings, and avoid building the high extra space it takes to mount large game in a house. Although, great rooms like AK Troutbum has sure look like a good place to hang out.
I understand its not a loss of forest acres that's the issue. I was asking if there was a food source underneath all the timber before its cut, which I assumed was no. You confirmed it is mostly barren. So my point is that they aren't losing any EXISTING food source because it simply wasn't...
What is the understory like where the clearcut logging takes place prior to the logging? Shrubs and grasses or dead pine needles? In my experience, which is limited in logging areas, the understory is just crunchy pine needles and wouldn't provide much if any food source for deer or anything...
Its a personal thing. If you know you don't have a big appetite while BP hunting then don't pack a bunch of extra just because other guys say they eat a lot. Im a big eater at home and rarely skip making a hot breakfast in the mornings, but when Im on my elk hunt I cut way back. This year I...
It's simple, the people you (Californians) elect don't want you hunting. Therefore they ban cat hunting and other predator hunting so that you don't have the deer to hunt because the cats are killing them all. Eventually you are deterred from it and quit hunting. Same thing is going on with...
Continue to scout online until you leave. Don't pay much attention to the anxiety of going solo for the first time, stay focused on the hunt. Hunt within your limitations and have fun.
Id add 2nd skin, or similar blister band aides. That's the only item I've ever used out of my kit. If you think you are getting blisters, get on top of them early...hiking mountains with blisters is no fun.
It only stings for 11 months. Over time you get used to dealing with it better, and view "success" in other ways. Being serious about elk hunting is more like a career than an annual event.
